FORT WORTH, Texas – Washington State freshman Morgan Weaver provided some late-game heroics and the Cougars battled with just 10 players for the final 40 minutes as WSU and Texas Christian battled to a 1-1, double overtime draw Friday evening at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
With the draw the Cougars move to 3-2-1 on the season while TCU goes to 5-0-1.
Trailing 1-0 and with the TCU defense packed in the final 10 minutes of regulation, Weaver provided some late-game heroics as she slammed home a rebound off a Kelsee Crenshaw shot to tie the game at 1-1 in the 89th minute, giving WSU life after battling in a physical game from the start. It marked Weaver's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
In the second half Kaitlyn Johnson picked up two yellow cards, the first in the 59th minute and the second in the 70th minute, ending her night and forcing WSU to play with 10 players the final 20 minutes of regulation and the entire 20 minutes of overtime.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Horned Frogs took the first lead of the game as Kayla Hill took a pass from Emma Heckendorn and beat Cougar goalkeeper Ella Dederick to her left for the 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. It marked the second goal of the season for Hill.
The Cougar had a number of quality looks in the first half, including a header that hit the crossbar, and forced TCU goalkeeper Courtney Hofer to make some outstanding saves. The first half saw TCU outshoot the Cougars 8-4 and hold a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in what became a very physical game.
For the game TCU outshot WSU 15-14 though the Cougars held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks. Both goalkeepers recorded four saves on the night.
The Cougars return home to face Seattle, Thursday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field.
