RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball standout, Klay Thompson, will compete for his first gold medal, as he helped the United States to an 82-76 victory over Spain, Friday, in the semifinals of the 2016 Olympic Games. His former teammates, Aron Baynes and Brock Motum , both members of Australia's national team, fell in the semifinals to Serbia, 87-61, and will now face Spain in the Bronze medal game.
Thompson led the United States with 22 points as he went 8-for-16 from the field with 4 3-pointers, and added 3 assists and 4 rebounds. Thompson also played a team-high 35 minutes in the game. The U.S. men now boast of a 137-5 all-time record in Olympic play and have won a medal in 14 of the 17 Olympic men's basketball competitions in which they have competed.
Baynes finished with 7 points and 8 rebounds in Australia's loss, clocking 21 minutes. Motum went 5-for-8 from the field to finish with 13 points in 11 minutes. He added 2 rebounds.
Australia has yet to medal in an Olympics. It has the chance as it faces Spain for the Bronze medal, Sunday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 a.m. PT. The United States faces Serbia in the Gold-Silver game, at 11:45 a.m. PT.
