SAN FRANCISCO -- Kyra Holt, Washington State University's outstanding senior volleyball player is one of 14 named to the 2016 Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team as selected by a vote of the conference coaches.
Holt, a 6-1 outside hitter from Hercules, Calif., was a 2015 All-Pac-12 First Team selection, and a member of the 2016 Pac-12 All-Star team that competed in China earlier this summer.
Last season Holt led WSU with 3.91 kills per set which was sixth-best in Pac-12 and 62nd-best in NCAA. She also tallied 4.51 points per set which was seventh-best in Pac-12 and 52nd-best in the NCAA. A talented all-around player, Holt led the team with a 35 service aces and her 0.32 aces per set average was fourth-best in Pac-12.
In WSU's all-time career records, Holt's 1,293 kills is sixth-best, her 1486.5 points is second-best, and her 91 aces is eighth-best. She has 883 career digs, and is expected to reach the school's top 10 this season. Holt will join an exclusive group of Cougars when she becomes the fifth to reach both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. The four previous players to reach 1,000 kills and digs club are Shannon Wyckoff (Hunt) 1994-97 - currently an assistant coach for WSU volleyball, Keren Oigman (1994-97), LaToya Harris (1999-2002), and Jaicee Harris (2012-14).
In the Pac-12 Coaches Preseason Poll as voted on by the league coaches, Stanford received 119 points and nine first-place votes. UCLA was voted second (103 points) followed by Washington (99), Oregon (95), USC (85), Arizona (72), Colorado (50), Utah (48), Washington State (46), California (27), Arizona State (26), and Oregon State (22). WSU received its most points and highest preseason poll position in the five years of the 12-member conference poll.
WSU is ranked No. 33 in the 2016 PrepVolleyball.com College Top 50 preseason rankings with other Pac-12 schools ranked in the same preseason poll as follows: 6. UCLA, 8. Stanford, 12. Washington, 14. Oregon, 16. USC, 25. Arizona, 36. Colorado, 38. Utah, and 40. Arizona State.
In the preseason AVCA Top 25 poll, Washington and USC are tied at seventh while Stanford in No.11 and UCLA ranked No. 12. Other Pac-12 schools also receiving votes are Oregon, Arizona and Arizona State.
WSU opens the season against No. 24 Kentucky and then takes on No. 20 Purdue at the Purdue Mortar Board Tournament Aug. 26-27, in West Lafayette, Ind. The next weekend WSU travels to the Long Beach State Tournament, meeting the perennial West Coast powerhouse host team, Long Beach State, also receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll, Sept. 3. The Cougars host the Cougar Challenge tournament Sept. 9-10, in Bohler Gym, taking on Maryland Eastern Shore, George Washington and Idaho. WSU completes its pre-conference schedule Sept. 16-17, at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. All road matches will be broadcast live in the Pullman area on KQQQ-AM radio (1150) and online on the wsucougars.com website. Veteran broadcaster Steve Grubbs will be announcing his 11th season of Cougar volleyball.
