T&F Teams and Student-Athletes Earn National Academic Honors

WSU men's and women's track teams and eight student-athletes received national recognition for their combination of athletic and academic excellence in 2016 by the USTFCCCA.

NEW ORLEANS -- Both Washington State University men's and women's track and field teams, as well as eight student-athletes, received national recognition for their combination of athletic and academic excellence in 2016 among all NCAA Division I institutions by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
 
The Cougar women's team, with a 3.33 cumulative grade point average, was one of seven Pac-12 members and one of 220 DI women's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
 
Six WSU women track and field competitors were singled out for individual All-Academic awards: Greer Alsop (sophomore, triple jump, Invercargill, New Zealand) 3.78 GPA, psychology major; Danielle Darden (junior, sprints/relays, Aliso Viejo, Calif.) 3.36 GPA, strategic communication major; Regyn Gaffney (freshman, sprints/relays, Chehalis, Wash.) 3.44 GPA, undeclared major; Dominique Keel (senior, sprints/relays, Beaverton, Ore.) 3.91 GPA, sociology major; Audrey Ketcham (senior, pole vault, Wenatchee, Wash.) 3.39 GPA, anthropology major; and Kelsie Taylor (senior, javelin, Naches, Wash.) 3.65 GPA sport science major.
 
The Cougar men's team, with a 3.06 cumulative grade point average, was one of four Pac-12 members and one of 122 DI men's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
 
The two WSU men honored were Thane Pierson (senior, high jump, Naches, Wash.) 3.88 GPA, strategic communication major, and Forrest Shaffer (redshirt senior, steeplechase, Petaluma, Calif.) 3.55 GPA, neuroscience major.
 
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
