Seven Athletes with Cougar Ties Head to Rio Olympic Games
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University has six former/current student-athletes and one current coach competing in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Aug. 6-21, representing three different countries.
Three former men's basketball student-athletes, one former and one current rowing student-athlete, one former track and field athlete and one current track and field coach will be representing Washington State, and their respective countries at the Olympics.
At age 41, Cougar track and field legend, Bernard Lagat is competing with the United States and is making his fifth Olympic appearance, as he'll compete in the 5,000m race, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 17 with the preliminary heats. The finals will take place Saturday, Aug. 20. He's a two-time Olympic medalist with one silver medal and one bronze.
Former men's basketball student-athlete, Aron Baynes (2006-09) is making his second Olympic appearance as he'll team up with fellow former Cougar, Brock Motum (2010-13), as they represent Australia at this year's Olympics. They will face a familiar foe in Klay Thompson (2009-11), who was a teammate of both Baynes' and Motum's, at different times, and is a member of the United States' men's basketball team. Like Motum, Thompson is competing in his first Olympics.
Both the United States and Australia are in Group A and will have games Saturday, Aug. 6, Monday, Aug. 8, Wednesday, Aug. 10, Friday, Aug. 12 and Sunday, Aug. 14. The two countries play each other, Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. PT. The quarterfinals take place Wednesday, Aug. 17, the semifinals Friday, Aug. 19 and the gold and bronze medal games on Sunday, Aug. 21.
Former rower, Lisa Roman (2011-13), and rising-senior, Nicole Hare (2013-present), are representing their native- Canada, at this year's Olympics. Both are competing in their first Olympics as Roman is rowing with the women's eight crew and Hare is in the women's pair boat. Competition starts Sunday, Aug. 7 for Hare and Monday, Aug. 8 for Roman. All rowing action wraps up by Saturday, Aug. 13.
Current track and field assistant coach, Angela Whyte, will be competing in the 100m hurdles for Canada at Rio. The 36-year-old is making her third Olympic appearance after a sixth-place finish in the 100m hurdles at the 2004 Athens games and competing in the 2007 Beijing Games. The preliminary heats for Whyte take place Tuesday, Aug. 16 with the semifinals and finals the next day, Wednesday, Aug. 17.
