Cougars Complete Second Day of NCAA Championships

The varsity eight won its heat to advance to the C Final Sunday.

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Washington State University rowing's second varsity eight advanced to the Petite Final and the varsity eight and varsity four each advanced to the C Final in their respective events, Saturday morning at the 2016 NCAA Championships at Lake Natoma.

California, Ohio State and Virginia were the only three teams to advance all three boats to the Grand Finals. Princeton, Stanford and Washington each advanced two boats to the Grand Finals.

In WSU's first race of the day, the varsity eight (coxswain – Rebecca Burns, stroke – Emily Thomson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Jordan Watson, Lucie Weissova, Jess Brougham, Morgan Cathrea, Savannah Davison, bow – Kim Coon) took to the water in the C/D Semifinals, racing out the second lane against Duke (lane one), Northeastern (lane three), Rhode Island (lane four), and Navy (lane five). The Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead, holding a couple seat lead over the Cougars. At the 1,000-mark WSU made its first move, taking a slight lead over Duke at the 1,500-meter mark. Washington State continued to build on its lead and finished first by a boat length with a time of 6:29.524. The varsity eight will move on to the C Final for places 13-18, Sunday, May 29 at 9:12 a.m.

In the Cougars' second race of the day, the second varsity eight (coxswain - Jenna Mangiagli, stroke – Emily Morrow, Isabella Watt, Chloe Rogers, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Katrina Tarrant, Jessica Newson, bow - Lori VerMurlen) battled in the second A/B Semifinal to determine who goes to the Grand Final and who advances to the Petite Final. California took the lead immediately, as it won the race with a time of 6:21.390, closely followed by Washington in second at 6:24.020. Princeton was the third team to advance to the Grand Final as it finished third. The Cougars finished sixth with a time of 6:42.778, and move on to the Petite Final with Yale and Stanford. That race for places 7-12 will take place Sunday at 10:24 a.m.

In the first varsity four C/D Semifinal, WSU (coxswain – Ellie Burg, Codi Swenson, Katie Persley, Kortyna Lasaite, Paige Danielson) jumped out to third place early, as Syracuse led the pack, followed by Northeastern. At the 1,000-meter mark, the Cougars turned it on and pulled into second place where they finished with a time of 7:24.754. Along with heat-winner Syracuse and third-place-finisher Northeastern, WSU will compete in the C Final, for places 13-18, Sunday at 8:24 a.m.
