LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Washington State track and field did not have any additional competitors advance Saturday at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Rounds at the University of Kansas Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence. Because of inclement weather that wiped out nearly all of the events the first day, the races Saturday were all quarterfinals. Of the 48 competitors in each event, only 12 advance to the NCAA Championships, June 8-11, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
The Cougars will have two men, intermediate hurdler CJ Allen and decathlete Dino Dodig, and one woman, Liz Harper, who qualified to compete in the heptathlon and high jump, at the national meet next month.
Saturday, WSU had competitors in seven events. Leading the Cougar women was Dominique Keel (senior, Beaverton, Ore.) who ran a PR time in the 200m dash of 23.55 seconds, fourth-best in WSU all-time records. Keel finished 21st in the event. She also ran on both relays. The 4x100m relay of Regyn Gaffney, Danielle Darden, Christiana Ekelem and Keel finished 19th after running a time of 45.60, and the 4x400m relay of Gaffney, Keel, Ekelem and Harper placed 18th in a time of 3 minutes, 38.08 seconds. In the triple jump, Kayla Warren (senior, Seattle) was 32nd with a leap of 40-feet, 7 3/4 inches (12.39m) and Kiana Davis (junior, Longview, Wash.) was 33rd with a leap of 40-7 1/2 (12.38m). Greer Alsop (redshirt sophomore, Invercargill, New Zealand) fouled all three attempts.
WSU's men competing Saturday included Terrance Chambers (senior, Federal Way, Wash.) who finished 37th in the 200m with a time of 21.43. Michael Williams (sophomore, Richland, Wash.) ran the 5000m in a time of 14:43.77 for 32nd. The men's 4x100m relay squad of Zach Smith, Ja'Maun Charles, Chambers and Jonnie Green did not finish their race after dropping the baton during an exchange.
