WSU Finishes Fourth at Pac-12 Rowing Championships

The Cougars notched their second-straight top-four finish.

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – For the second-straight year, No. 13 Washington State University rowing finished in the top-four of the conference as it placed fourth at the 2016 Pac-12 Rowing Championships, Sunday, under great conditions at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.

No. 2 California won its second-straight Pac-12 title, its eighth in the last nine years and its 11th since 2004. The Golden Bears held off rival Stanford for the varsity eight victory by less than a second to sweep the top-three events, varsity eight, second varsity and varsity four, to collect a total of 45 points. No. 6 Stanford beat out No. 4 Washington by a point and a half to place second with 35 points. Just a half a point separated WSU from No. 12 USC, as the Cougars placed fourth with 22.5 points and the Trojans were fifth with 22 points. No. 20 UCLA (15.5) finished sixth, while Oregon State rounded out the Pac-12 competitors in seventh with 8 points.

“Anytime you have several boats finish above their seeds at a Pac-12 Championship, it's a good day,” WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. “It was just that for the Cougs, and hopefully we'll have a couple more weeks together to get a little faster. “

The Cougars entered the final event of the day, the varsity eight race, with a four-point lead over UCLA and a 6.5 point lead over USC. Seeded fifth, WSU's varsity eight (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, stroke- Emily Thomson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Savannah Davison, Morgan Cathrea, Jess Brougham, Lucie Weissova, Jordan Watson, bow- Kim Coon) finished just over five seconds behind Washington at 6:35.5, nearly six seconds ahead of UCLA, to match its seeding at fifth. California won with a time of 6:22.0, just ahead of Stanford at 6:22.8. USC edged out Washington as the Trojans clocked in at 6:29.7, and the Huskies finished fourth in 6:29.8. The Cougars earned 9 points, while the Trojans picked up 15, keeping WSU head of USC in the overall standings and fourth place overall.

In the third race of the day, the second varsity eight crew (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Emily Morrow, Isabella Watt, Jessica Newson, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Katrina Tarrant, Chloe Rogers, bow- Lori VerMurlen) entered the event seeded fifth. The Cougars jumped out to fourth place early, and held on for eight points with a time of 6:42.9. California won by nearly four seconds at 6:26.8, followed by Washington (6:30.6) and Stanford (6:38.5).

In the second race of the morning, WSU's varsity four (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Codi Swenson, Katie Persley, Kotryna Lasaite, bow- Paige Danielson) entered as the sixth seed. The Cougars jumped out to fifth early and maintained the spot to earn 3 points and clock a time of 7:27.1, nine seconds ahead of UCLA. California won with a time of 7:04.7, followed by Washington at 7:08.8, Stanford in third (7:15.4) and USC in fourth (7:25.8).

Like the second varsity eight and varsity four crews, the third varsity eight (coxswain- Taylor Brown, stroke- Grace Arnis, Tammy Hilgendorf, Jill Hannink, Megan Lee, Jenna Kennedy, Miranda Armstrong, Colleen Gibbons, bow- Brittany Brooks) finished one spot ahead of its seeding, placing third with a time of 6:45.2. Washington won the race at 6:30.6, followed by California in second with a time of 6:37.4.

The Cougars will now await the selections for the NCAA Rowing Championships which will take place at the same location, Lake Natoma at Gold River, Calif., May 27-29. The selections will be announced by the NCAA Tuesday, May 17 at www.NCAA.com.
