THIS WEEK: The Washington State men's golf team will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to compete at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Utah, Friday through Sunday, April 29-May 1.
THE TOURNAMENT: Four rounds will be played over the span of three days at The Country Club, a par-71, 7,209-yard course…founded in 1899, The Country Club is one of the oldest clubs in the western United States…The Club is located in the Wasatch mountain range, just outside of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah…teams will tee-off Friday beginning at 6:30 a.m. PT/7:30 a.m. MT for the first round, followed by the second round at 11:30 a.m. PT/12:30 p.m. MT…the third and fourth rounds will start at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT Saturday and at 7 a.m. PT/8 a.m. MT Sunday, respectively.
THE FIELD: All 12 members of the conference will compete at the event, including six top-30 opponents; No. 2 USC, No. 4 Stanford, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 13 California, No. 23 Oregon, and No. 27 Washington.
REPRESENTING WASHINGTON STATE: Competing for the Cougars will be sophomore Derek Bayley, freshmen Aaron Whalen and AJ Armstrong, senior Evan Omelia, sophomore Zach Anderson, and junior Nick Mandell.
LAST TIME AT THE PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS: Bayley, tying for 15th (+3, 283), recorded the best conference-championship finish by a WSU freshman in school history at the 2015 event, hosted by WSU at Palouse Ridge Golf Club…the Cougars finished 10th (+53,1453), six strokes ahead of then-No. 49 Colorado, in a field which featured eight top-25 teams…then-seniors Michael Anderson and Sang Lee tied for 17th (+4, 284) and 29th (+8, 288), respectively, the best conference-championship finishes of their careers.
LAST TIME ON THE GREEN: WSU finished third (-6, 858) at the PING Cougar Classic at Provo, Utah, April 12, at the Riverside Country Club…the team finished three strokes back of second-place finisher Wyoming (-9, 855) and 29 strokes behind tournament-champion BYU (-35,829)…Anderson, one of four top-25 finishers for the Cougars, tied for 14th and tied his career-best three-round versus par score, shooting 2-under par (214)…Omelia and Bayley tied for 16th (-1, 215), one stroke behind Anderson…Whalen tied for 19th after shooting even par through three rounds (216).
COACHING STAFF:The men's golf team is led by fifth-year head coach Garrett Clegg…assisting Clegg is WSU alumnus Dustin White, a third-year assistant coach who golfed for the Cougars from 1999-2003.
