OJAI, Calif. – Senior Trang Huynh picked up her 31st victory on the season as the No. 69 Washington State tennis team wrapped up day one at the Pac-12 Championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Center, Thursday afternoon.
In the Championship Flight Huynh, in her first Pac-12 Championship, posted a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory over Colorado's Annabell Andrinopoulos, to advance to the round of 16. The win marks Huynh's 31st of the season and moves her into a tie for third on the WSU single-season wins list. Huynh's next match pitted her against the No. 1-seed of the Flight and the nation's No. 11-ranked player in California's Maegan Manasse. Huynh could not maintain her momentum against Manasse and fell 6-1, 6-0.
Barbora Michalkova joined Huynh in the Championship Flight but was unable to advance to the round of 16. Michalkova took on Arizona's Lauren Marker, ranked No. 51 nationally. Marker took the first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), and ultimately secured the match by posting a 6-1 second, leading to the 7-6 (3), 6-1 result.
In the Invitational Flight, Aneta Miksovska and Victoria Matejevic both faced opponents from Arizona State. ASU's Alexandra Osborne downed Miksovska in a close 6-4, 7-5 match, while Victoria Matejevic fell in a back and forth 6-4, 7-5, decision to Gussie O'Sullivan of Arizona State.
The Cougars return to action Friday morning with doubles play. WSU's duo of Huynh and Matejevic will face Oregon's No. 81-ranked duo of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita in the Doubles Championship Flight, while Miksovska and Michalkova will face Alexandra Aiello and Kyra Wojcik of Colorado in the Doubles Invitational Flight.
