WSU Rowing Completes First Day at Clemson Invite

The No. 14 Washington State women's rowing team concluded day one of the 2016 Clemson Invite.

CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 14 Washington State rowing notched one win and finished second three times in its four heats during the morning session of the Clemson Invitational, Saturday, at Lake Hartwell. WSU raced closely with No. 10 Michigan in the second session.
 
The Cougar third varsity eight (coxswain- Taylor Brown, stroke- Jenna Kennedy, Katrina Tarrant, Jill Hannink, Megan Lee, Grace Arnis, Miranda Armstrong, Colleen Gibbons, bow- Tammy Hilgendorf) notched a win under tough wind conditions in the tightest race of the morning session. Facing six competitors on a 1,500-meter course, WSU stroked out to an early lead in the race and held on through its entirety. No. 19 Syracuse and Clemson were left chasing the Cougars, who finished in 5:10.2. Syracuse crossed the finish line at 5:11.5 and Clemson clocked-in with a time of 5:11.8. No. 4 Ohio State finished fourth with a time of 5:16.8, followed by Oklahoma (5:18.2) and No. 13 Indiana (5:28.2).
 
Washington State's varsity eight (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, stroke- Emily Thomson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Jess Brougham, Morgan Cathrea, Savannah Davison, Lucie Weissova, Jordan Watson, bow- Kim Coon) finished second behind Virginia, ranked No. 3 nationally, in a tightly contested heat. The Cavaliers completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:43.1, just five seconds ahead of the WSU, which crossed the line at 6:48.2. No. 13 Indiana finished five seconds behind the Cougars with a time of 6:53.1. The rest of the crews were at least eight seconds behind WSU, with Pennsylvania finishing fourth at 6:56.5, followed by Cemson (7:02.4), Cornell (7:04.8) and Central Florida (7:05.6).
 
In Washington State's second varsity eight heat, Saturday morning, the Cougars again found themselves in a highly competitive race with No. 3 Virginia. The Washington State, No. 3 Virginia and No. 13 Indiana crews pushed out from the field after close racing off the starting line. The Cougars (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Emily Morrow, Taija Thompson, Chloe Rogers, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Isabella Watt, Jessica Newson, bow- Lori VerMurlen) battled to a hard-fought second-place finish. WSU crossed the line in 6:57.6, behind No. 3 Virginia which finished in 6:55.8, with less than two seconds separating the crews. The third-place crew, No. 13 Indiana, finished a half of a second back of WSU at 6:58.1, followed by Clemson (7:10.9), Pennsylvania (7:13.5), Cornell (7:21.4) and Central Florida (7:38.9).
 
Washington State and No. 3 Virginia continued to battle in Saturday morning's third heat of varsity four racing. WSU (coxswain- Ellie Burg, Codi Swenson, Kotryna Lasaite, Paige Danielson bow- Brittany Brooks) once again finished second behind No. 3 Virginia. The Cougars made multiple attempts to overtake the Cavaliers, however, No. 3 Virginia was able to maintain its advantage and finished in 7:40.0. The Cougars crossed the line in 7:53.1, 13 seconds behind the Cavaliers. The third-place crew was Clemson at 7:55.4, finishing two seconds behind the Cougars, followed by No. 13 Indiana (8:00.2), Cornell (8:01.4), Pennsylvania (8:06.1) and Central Florida (8:10.5).
 
Teams had a chance to regroup before the evening races launched at Lake Hartwell. During the second session, Washington State battled close with No. 10 Michigan.
 
Washington State's second session varsity eight heat was as a fierce competition. Battling with No. 10 Michigan and Oregon State, the Cougars were composed from the start. WSU (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, stroke- Emily Thomson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Jess Brougham, Morgan Cathrea, Savannah Davison, Lucie Weissova, Jordan Watson, bow-Kim Coon) held the early lead off the line, before No. 10 Michigan began to make its move in the opening 500-meters. WSU pulled away from Oregon State through the 1,000-meter mark. Washington State was able to withstand Oregon State's final push in the last moments of the race. WSU crossed in 6:33.4, behind No. 10 Michigan, which crossed the line at 6:28.8. Oregon State ended up battling with Oklahoma for third, edging out the Sooners after crossing the line in 6:41.1. Oklahoma finished in fourth place with a time of 6:43.7, followed by Central Florida (6:44.5), Columbia (6:46.4) and Tennessee (6:50.1).
 
In WSU's second varsity eight's second race of the day, the Cougars took a decisive second place finish. Washington State (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Emily Morrow, Taija Thompson, Chloe Rogers, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Isabella Watt, Jessica Newson, bow- Lori VerMurlen) was edged in the final 750-meters by No. 10 Michigan, which pulled away and crossed in 6:31.6, five seconds ahead of the Cougars at 6:36.8. Washington State began the race with a great push from the starting line and led for most of the first 1,000-meters of the race, but could not quite withstand Michigan's sprint on the back end of the 2000-meter course. The Cougars crossed 10 seconds ahead of the next-closest finisher, Oklahoma. The Sooners finished in 6:46.8, followed by Tennessee (6:48.0), Columbia (6:49.3), Oregon State (6:51.9) and Central Florida (7:02.7).
 
The third varsity eight competed with No. 3 Virginia, No. 13 Indiana, Clemson, Michigan State, and Central Florida. The Cougars (coxswain- Taylor Brown, stroke- Jenna Kennedy, Katrina Tarrant, Jill Hannink, Megan Lee, Grace Arnis, Miranda Armstrong, Colleen Gibbons, bow- Tammy Hilgendorf) found themselves in a close race with Clemson for second place. Washington State withstood a surge from Clemson at the 1,500-meter mark, holding off the Tigers to finish second with a time of 6:52.9. Clemson finished five seconds behind WSU, with a time of 6:58.0. No. 3 Virginia won the heat with a time of 6:48.8, just four second ahead of the Cougars. Michigan State finished in fourth place with a time of 7:04.2, followed by No. 13 Indiana (7:06.3) and Central Florida (7:13.8).
 
The WSU varsity four continued the trend of close racing in the afternoon. The Cougars (coxswain- Ellie Burg, Codi Swenson, Kotryna Lasaite, Paige Danielson, bow- Brittany Brooks) found themselves in a close race with Oklahoma and Tennessee for second place. Washington State was narrowly defeated by Oklahoma (7:28.7), but secured third with a solid sprint in the last 200 meters, finishing in 7:30.0. The Cougars finished less than two seconds behind Oklahoma and five and a half seconds ahead of Tennessee, which crossed the line in 7:35.5. No. 10 Michigan won the race with a time of 7:22.0. Columbia finished in fifth place with a time of 7:38.3, followed by Oregon State (7:48.3) and Central Florida (7:49.3).
 
The Cougars continue at the Sunday session of the Clemson Invite at Lake Hartwell, April 17. Racing is scheduled to begin at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET, with the Cougars' first race scheduled for a 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET start.
