Cougars Get Offensive in Second Spring Scrimmage

The Cougar offense accounts for 10 touchdowns and 571 yards of total offense.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State football held its second scrimmage of the spring, accounting for nearly 100 plays in Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Cougar offense scored 10 touchdowns, six through the air and four on the ground while the defense tallied six sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups while forcing one fumble.

Quarterback Luke Falk went 13-of-17 for 191 yards, one interception and two touchdowns, including a 36-yard connection with senior Gabe Marks for the second score of the day. Quarterbacks Peyton Bender and Tyler Hilinski each threw for more than 100 yards, with Bender completing 10-of-17 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown while Hilinski was 14-of-23 for 104 yards and two scores. Christian Jorgensen went 5-of-9 for 33 yards and an interceptions while freshman Justus Rogers saw his first scrimmage action of the spring, going 6-of-8 for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Tavares Martin Jr. led the receivers with seven catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns, the first a 20-yarder from Falk and the second a three-yard catch from Hilinski to cap the scoring. Marks added six catches for 108 yards, while receivers Robert Lewis, Kyrin Priester and John Thompson each caught five passes and had a touchdown.

The running backs also found the end zone, led by junior Jamal Morrow who carried six times for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Gerard Wicks also had six carries for 14 yards and a score, while James Williams had two rushes for eight yards, including the first score of the day, a three-yard burst. Alijah Lee added three carries for nine yards.

Defensively, the Cougars collected six sacks, including two more from sophomore defensive end Nick Begg. Begg had two sacks in the spring's first scrimmage. Also getting to the quarterbacks were Nnamdi Oguayo, Logan Tago, Peyton Pelluer and Greg Hoyd III.

After allowing a touchdown on the opening drive, the defense held the first-team offense on down then junior Charleston White stepped in front of a Luke Falk pass on the third series, the first of two interceptions on the day. Two series later, Hunter Dale collected a deflected pass from Christian Jorgenson for his first interception of the spring.

The Cougars continue spring practice Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
