AZUSA, Calif. -- Washington State junior Liz Harper took seventh and freshman Lindsey Schauble placed 30th Thursday afternoon at the California Invitational Heptathlon being held at Azusa Pacific University.
Harper, from Missoula, Mont., scored 5,472 points for seventh place overall and was the fourth collegiate to place in her heptathlon debut. Harper's point total is seventh-best in WSU all-time records. In the second day of events, Harper long jumped 19-feet, 1/2 inch (5.80m), threw the javelin 89-6 (27.28m) and ran the 800m in an outstanding time of 2 minutes, 16.23 seconds.
Schauble, from Kennewick, Wash., scored 4,650 points for 30th place, moving up from 33rd place after the first day. Schauble long jumped 17-5 1/2 (5.32m), threw the javelin a PR distance of 96-0 (29.27m) and ran the 800m in 2:25.70.
Angela Whyte, an assistant for the Cougars competing unattached in the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon, started the day in fifth place but after long jumping 19-7 (5.97m) and throwing the javelin 128-11 (39.30m), did not run the 800m. Akela Jones, a senior at Kansas State, won the Mt. SAC Relays hept with a score of 6,307 points.
At the Mt. SAC Relays taking place in Norwalk, Calif., this year, several Cougars competed in Thursday events. In the men's 3000m steeplechase College/Open section: Nathan Wadhwani (PR 9:20.68 - 10th), Kyler Little (PR 9:23.67 - 30th) and Jake Finney (9:34.97 - 43rd). The women's 3000m steeplechase College/Open section: Devon Bortfeld (10:42.71 - 21st). Katie Wardsworth threw the hammer 181-2 (55.22m) for seventh in the women's College/Open section, and Travis Pickett placed 10th in the men's College/Open section with his throw of 185-10 (56.65m). The Mt. SAC Relays continue Friday and Saturday.
At the Long Beach State Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Meet, WSU men throwers Brad Stevens' javelin mark was 216-5 (65.97m), and Travis Pickett equaled his PR in the hammer of 194-8 (59.34m). Women's throwers competing Thursday included Katie Wardsworth who threw the hammer 177-8 (54.15m) and Kelsie Taylor with a javelin toss of 134-5 (40.98m).
At the Whitworth Twilight meet in Spokane, Brock Eager, competing unattached, threw a PR of 203-0 (61.87m) to win the hammer, followed by Wyatt Meyring, also unattached, with a throw of 185-10 (56.64m). Cougars Amani Brown (143-1/43.61m) took seventh and Derek Crites (131-10/40.18m) placed 11th in the hammer. Taylor O'Toole threw a season-best javelin distance of 176-2 (53.69m) for fourth place. Tyler Jackson, competing unattached, was runner up in the shot put with a PR of 48-4 (14.73m) and took third in the discus with a PR of 153-11 (46.92m). Kollin Crown, also unattached, threw the shot put 42-2 3/4 (12.87m) for sixth.
