PULLMAN, Wash. – Malachi Flynn (6-1, 165, Guard, Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep), the Associated Press's 2015-16 State Player of the Year, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for Washington State University beginning with the 2016-17 season, head coach Ernie Kent announced Wednesday.
Flynn earned three varsity letters at Bellarmine Prep under head coach Bernie Salazar where he compiled 1,625 career points, ranking second in school history. He also finished second in Bellarmine Prep history for career steals. As a senior he averaged 29.7 points per game, while shooting .480 from the field and .880 from the free throw line. He added 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists an outing. His 743 points in his final year set a Bellarmine Prep single-season scoring record, breaking the mark set by current NBA player, Avery Bradley, in 2008.
As a senior, Flynn helped lead the Lions to a 20-6 overall mark, and 12-0 league record, as the team fell in the 4A Regionals. In four 4A West Central District tournament games, Flynn scored 149 points, averaging 37.0 points per game, breaking the tournament scoring record. Following his senior season, Flynn was named the Washington state player of the year for all classifications by the Associated Press, as well as the AP's State 4A Player of the Year and to the AP's first team all-State. He was also named the Tacoma News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year, Class 4A Narrows League MVP and Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches' Association 4A Player of the Year.
Flynn joins Milan Acquaah (6-2, 195, Guard, Pasadena, Calif./Cathedral HS) and Jeff Pollard (6-8, 235, Forward, Bountiful Utah/Bountiful HS/Impact Academy), who each signed NLIs with the Cougars in the fall.
