Cougar Throwers Thrive at Idaho Invite

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Washington State thrower Katie Wardsworth tossed the fifth-best women's hammer mark in school history Saturday at the Idaho Invitational Track and Field meet at the Dan O'Brien Complex in Moscow.

Wardsworth, a redshirt sophomore from Spokane Valley, Wash., made the most of her “homecoming” meet in Moscow with her personal-record and winning hammer throw of 182-feet, 4 inches (55.58m). Wardsworth competed as a freshman for Idaho but did not compete last year before transferring to WSU.

The WSU men captured three wins in the throws Saturday afternoon. Matt Wardell (senior, Post Falls, Idaho) won the shot put with a PR heave of 54-9 1/2 (16.70m) and Adam Mahama (redshirt junior, Pullman) won the discus with a PR throw of 158-10 (48.41m). Brock Eager (sophomore, Renton, Wash., throwing unattached, won the hammer with a throw of 193-6 (58.97m), followed by Travis Pickett (redshirt junior, Snohomish, Wash.) in second place with a season-best throw of 193-1 (58.86m).

Other Cougars winning events Saturday included Essence White (senior, Tracy, Calif.) in the women's long jump with a distance of 18-7w (5.66m), Jake Nienhuis (freshman, Issaquah, Wash.) in the men's 400m dash with a time of 51.15 seconds, and Kainoa Tom (freshman, Wailuku, Hawai'i) in the men's pole vault with a clearance at 14-9 (4.50m).

The next track and field competitions for the Cougars are April 1-2, at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, the Stanford Invitational, and the Whitworth University Sam Adams Classic.
