PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johnson won the women's pentathlon and led a one-two-three Cougar finish Friday during the first day of the Cougar Indoor meet.
Brooks-Johnson, a junior from Doty, Wash., scored a career-best 4,101 points, third-best in school history and currently ranked 12th-best nationally. The 2015 Pac-12 outdoor heptathlon champion opened the five-event competition Friday afternoon with a PR time in the 60m hurdles of 8.81 seconds. She bettered her PR in the high jump by four inches when she cleared the bar at 5-feet, 9 1/4 inches (1.76m), threw the shot put a three-foot PR distance of 39-8 1/2 (12.10m), long jumped a PR distance of 18-4 1/2 (5.60m), and ran the 800m in a time of 2 minutes, 19.80 seconds.
Competing in her first pentathlon, Liz Harper (junior, Missoula, Mont.) was the runner-up with 3,920, fourth-best total in WSU all-time records. Harper, who holds the second-best 400m hurdles time in WSU records, ran the 60m hurdles in 8.62, high jumped 5-8 (1.73m), put the shot a distance of 31-7 1/2 (9.64m), long jumped a PR distance of 18-6 (5.64m), and ran the 800m in 2:22.38. Freshman Lindsey Schauble (Kennewick, Wash.) finished third with 3,322 points which is 10th-best in WSU records. Schauble ran the 60m hurdles in 9.30, high jumped a PR height of 4-10 1/2 (1.49m), threw the shot put a three-foot PR distance of 33-3 3/4 (10.15m), long jumped a PR mark of 17-3 1/4 (5.426m), and ran the 800m in a time of 2:29.91.
After the first day of the men's heptathlon, Dino Dodig (junior, Novi Sad, Serbia) leads the competition with 2,967 points. He opened with a PR time in the 60m dash of 7.15, long jumped 22-5 (6.83m), threw the shot put 39-3 3/4 (11.98m), and cleared 6-4 3/4 (1.95m) in the high jump. Payton Lewis of Northwest Nazarene is in second place with 2,637 points.
Travis Pickett (redshirt junior, Snohomish, Wash.) won the men's 35-pound weight with a heave of 57-9 (17.60m) while Adam Mahama (redshirt junior, Pullman) finished third with a PR mark of 54-1 (16.48m).
Katie Wardsworth (redshirt sophomore, Spokane Valley, Wash.) won the women's 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 51-4 1/2 (15.66m).
WSU assistant coach and Canadian Olympian Angela Whyte won the women's long jump with a mark of 18-10 (5.74m) with Trinity Western's Hazel Ross second with a leap of 18-0 1/2 (5.50m). WSU's Greer Alsop placed third after jumping a distance of 17-10 3/4 (5.45m).
Idaho's Matt Sullivan won the men's pole vault after clearing 16-4 3/4 (5.00m). James Linde from Trinity Western won the men's long jump with a mark of 22-10 (6.96m) with WSU's Peyton Fredrickson the runner-up with a leap of 21-8 3.4 (6.62m).
The Washington State Cougar Indoor collegiate meet, continues Saturday morning at the Indoor Facility in Pullman.
