Box Score SEATTLE – Junior guard Lia Galdeira scored 34 points to lead Washington State to a 66-64 victory over the University of Oregon in the opening round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament at KeyArena Thursday.
The Cougars (17-13) notched an opening round win for the fourth consecutive year, erasing a nine-point deficit early in the second half and seeing Oregon's potential game-winning shot waved off for not leaving the Ducks (13-17) players' hand before the final buzzer sounded. Washington State tallied 26 points off of 17 Oregon turnovers and withstood the Ducks shooting 64 percent in the first half. The Cougars shot over 44 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 42 percent while scoring 14 second-chance points.
Washington State will face No. 2 seed Arizona State Friday at 11:30 a.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
Galdeira posted a career-high and a WSU Pac-12 Conference Tournament record 34 points, breaking the 31-point mark both her and Tia Presley set last season against Oregon. Galdeira scored 18 in the second half and finished with six 3-pointers, pushing her career 3-point total to 157, four away from Katie Appleton's school record of 161. The Kamuela, Hawaii native also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, dished out four assists and made two steals. The 34 points were three away from the Pac-12 Conference Tournament record of a 37, set by Nicole Powell of Stanford in 2002. Powell is now an assistant coach on the Oregon staff.
Senior guard Tia Presley added 10 points and four steals, junior forward Mariah Cooks notched 10 points and four rebounds while freshman forward Louise Brown scored seven points, highlighted by buzzer-beating three to end the first half. Junior point guard Dawnyelle Awa dished out six assists and freshman guard Caila Hailey provided the spark off the bench with five points and one assist in 13 minutes.
Washington State withstood Oregon's hot shooting in the opening minutes as Presley and Galdeira got things going for the Cougars. Both players scored on driving layups before Galdeira sank a three after Presley leaped out of bounds to save a loose ball, getting the ball to Galdeira who knocked one down from the right wing. Presley then followed with a pair of baskets but the Ducks answered with eight-straight points to take a seven-point lead at the 9:34 mark.
Late in the half, Galdeira caught fire again, scoring on a fastbreak, then connecting on a three from the right wing before Brown added a pair baskets to cut the Oregon lead to one, 29-28 with 4:20 remaining.
The Ducks again answered, this time with nine straight points before Brown gave the Cougars a huge boost just prior to the half, hitting a long three from the right wing as the clock expired. Oregon went into the locker room leading 38-33 after shooting 64 percent from the floor while Galdeira led all players with 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
Oregon opened the second half with a pair of threes but the Cougars erupted with 11 straight points that eventually grew to a 20-4 run, opening up a 55-48 advantage at the 7:54 mark. Galdeira got things going with a three from the right wing and then added another one the next trip down as Awa drove the lane and dished out to Galdeira in the right corner who knocked it down. Just as she did in the win over USC last Saturday, Hailey provided a spark off the bench, hitting a three from the right wing out after a timeout, then scoring on a fastbreak before dishing to Cooks underneath for a bucket, opening up a four-point lead for WSU. Following a pair of Oregon baskets, Galdeira struck from outside again, sinking one from the right wing, Presley added two free throws and Galdeira capped the run with a jumper from the left elbow for a seven-point lead.
With just over five minutes remaining, the Ducks scored five straight points to cut the Cougar lead to three but Galdeira took over, driving and dishing to Cooks underneath for a basket and later hitting a three from the left wing to push the lead to 66-60 with 2:29 remaining.
Oregon scored at the two-minute mark and then scored again on a steal and layup with 1:05 left to make it a two-point game. Washington State ran the shot clock down on its next possession before hoisting up a shot that missed off the back iron and Oregon grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 14 seconds remaining. The Cougars got a stop as Galdeira came up big again, grabbing a defensive rebound and was fouled. She missed the first free throw and Oregon grabbed the rebound with six seconds remaining. The Ducks raced up the court and but to get a shot off in time as the clock expired.
