Presley?s 28 Points Leads Cougars Past USC on Senior Day

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior guard Tia Presley scored 28 points to lead Washington State past the University of Southern California 68-62 on Senior Day at Beasley Coliseum Saturday.

The Cougars improved to 16-13 overall and finished with a 7-11 Pac-12 Conference record to enter next week's Pac-12 Conference Tournament in Seattle as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 Oregon in Thursday's opening round. WSU and Oregon split its regular season series 1-1, each posting road wins. USC falls to 15-14 including 7-11 in league play and will face Colorado in the first round in Seattle.

Presley sank 11-of-13 at the free throw line, both season-highs, and the Cougars received double-doubles from junior forward Mariah Cooks and junior guard Lia Galdeira. Cooks tallied 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, tying for sixth-most in WSU single-game history, and Galdeira recorded 11 points to along with 12 rebounds. The Cougars outrebounded the Trojans 54-28 and scored 18 second-chance points.

Presley moved into fourth all-time in WSU history with 1,504 career points and Galdeira made two steals to move into second all-time on school history with 260 career steals, passing Jazmine Perkins (2008-12). Prior to the game, the Cougars recognized seniors Presley and Shalie Dheensaw while Galdeira wore Dheensaw's uniform number 23 for the second straight game.

Washington State withstood a hot start by USC and received a boost from its bench as freshman guard Caila Hailey sparked a 7-2 streak for the Cougars. Hailey picked off a long pass and raced the length of the court to a layup before grabbing an offensive rebound and dishing to freshman forward Louise Brown for a layup. Following a USC basket, Hailey was at it again, driving the lane and finishing with the left hand for two before later adding a free throw to give WSU a two point lead at the 12:23 mark. The freshman from southern California finished with five points, two assists and two steals in just 10 minutes of playing time.

USC continued to shoot well, using a 9-2 run to build a seven-point lead but the Cougars came right back as Presley started to heat up in her final regular-season game at Beasley Coliseum. WSU scored six straight with Presley following a Galdeira layup with a pair of free throws and nice up-and-under move from the right post for two more. Presley then added another basket on a drive for a layup as she was fouled. She hit the free throw and capped an 11-2 Cougar run with a runner in the lane as the shot clock expired that tied the game at 31 with just under two minutes remaining.

Washington State closed the half with four straight points as Galdeira and junior point guard Dawnyelle each sank two free throws to send the Cougars into the break up 35-31. USC shot over 54 percent in the first 20 minutes but the Cougars hit 44 percent of their shots and outrebounded the Trojans 22-9. Presley tallied nine points in the first half.

The Cougars took advantage of a USC mistake in the early minutes of the second half as a Trojan player was whistled for a technical foul while arguing a foul call, resulting in two free throws for WSU. Presley sank both at the line and the Cougars scored six straight points after the technical. Galdeira scored after grabbing an offensive rebound and hitting a short jumper from the right wing and Presley followed with drive and runner high off the glass for a 45-34 lead at the 14:34 mark.

Minutes later, just as Southern California began to chip away at the lead, Presley knocked down a three from the left wing and Brown connected from behind-the-arc in the right corner to keep the WSU lead in double-digits.

The Trojans continued to attack the Cougar defense down the stretch and put together an 11-2 run to cut the WSU lead to two, 55-53 with just over six minutes remaining. Washington State turned to a couple of team captains as the game got tight with Cooks scoring after grabbing another offensive rebound and Presley added two straight buckets to push the lead back up to six with 3:18 left on the clock.

Cooks came up big again down the stretch, answering a USC basket with a driving left-handed layup and Presley added two more free throws to keep the lead at six with 59 seconds left. The Trojans hit a three to make it a three-point game with 28 seconds remaining but Presley sank two more free throws after USC was forced to foul. A couple of long 3-point attempts by Southern California came up short and Galdeira sealed things up with more free throw, finishing off a 68-62 victory.

The Cougars will face the University of Oregon in Thursday's opening round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament at KeyArena in Seattle.
