Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped another tough Pac-12 Conference contest in the final seconds Friday, falling 70-69 to the visiting University of Oregon at Beasley Coliseum.
WSU (13-9, 4-7 Pac-12) saw its go-ahead shot attempt rattle off the rim with six seconds remaining, allowing the Ducks (11-11, 4-7 Pac-12) to hang on and snap its three-game losing skid to the Cougars. Washington State shot 43 percent and scored 15 points off of 15 turnovers while Oregon shot over 47 percent and connected on 10 three-pointers.
Junior guard Lia Galdeira led WSU with 20 points to along with her six rebounds and four steals. Galdeira surpassed the 1,500 career-point mark on her jumper early in the second half, and finished the game with 1,509 career points, passing Jonni Gray for third place all time in WSU career scoring. Junior forward Mariah Cooks scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds and senior guard Tia Presley scored 16 points. Freshman forward Louise Brown added eight points and eight rebounds as Cooks, Brown and Galdeira all played 35 minutes. Forward Jillian Alleyne led Oregon with 20 points and 19 rebounds.
The Cougars opened the game with five straight points but Oregon countered with eight straight and took advantage of its size in the low post to own a lead most of the half.
Galdeira kept WSU in it with four straight points midway through the half and Brown later drained a three from the left wing to make it a one-point game but the Ducks came right back with a 7-0 run to take a 30-22 lead at the 4:48 mark. The Oregon lead grew to 10 at one point before Galdeira connected on another three from the right wing to send the Cougars into the half trailing 37-30.
Oregon shot 48 percent in the first half and tallied 22 points in the paint while the Cougars shot 41 percent from the field while surrendering a 21-12 rebound advantage. Galdeira led WSU with 10 points and Presley added eight in the first 20 minutes.
The Cougars jumped out of the gates to start the second half, scoring the first seven points on two straight Galdeira jumpers and a three from Cooks in the left corner that cut the Oregon lead to two. Both teams countered with runs as the Cougars answered a Ducks run with a 9-3 streak capped by a jumper from junior guard Taylor Edmondson to make shortened the Oregon advantage to 50-48 at the 12:15 mark.
Minutes later, Cooks sank two free throws and Galdeira made an acrobatic up-and-under layup around a Duck defender to make it a one-point game but Oregon again answered, hitting two straight threes to regain a seven-point advantage.
Washington State continued to battle, putting together one more run that pulled them even with Oregon. Galdeira got the Cougars going with a beautiful no-look dish to Cooks for an easy layin and then turned a steal into a coast-to-coast layup. Brown came up big for WSU, knocking down three from the left wing before Galdeira found Cooks again for an easy layin. Cooks then brought the Beasley Coliseum crowd to its feet with a huge block, snatching the ball out of the air and lobbing a pass to a streaking Dawnyelle Awa behind the Duck defense who dropped off a pass for Presley who finished the fastbreak with a layup, tying the game at 63 with 4:25 remaining.
Both teams traded buckets before Oregon hit a three to take a three-point lead at the 2:38 mark but Presley would score on a layup to make it a one-point game with 1:28 remaining. The Cougars got a stop but Galdeira missed a jumper with 45 seconds left and Oregon grabbed the rebound. Washington State fouled and Oregon sank both free throws to own a 70-67 lead with 22 seconds remaining.
Galdeira raced the length of the floor and hit a jumper from the free throw line that made it 70-69 Oregon with 11 seconds left. The Ducks nearly got whistled for a five-second call on the ensuing inbounds pass but got the pass off to guard Drea Toler who got behind the defense. Toler went for a layup but was fouled by Brown with six seconds left. Oregon missed both free throws and Galdeira again raced down the court, driving into the lane and getting off a shot in traffic that glanced off the backboard and rim and Oregon corralled the rebound. WSU fouled with 1.3 seconds left and Oregon sealed up the win after grabbing the rebound on the first missed free throw attempt.
Washington State will close out the home weekend against No. 7 Oregon State Sunday at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
