Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped an 83-43 contest to the visiting University of Washington at Beasley Coliseum Sunday.
The Cougars (15-12, 6-10 Pac-12) saw their three-game winning streak against UW snapped after being held to 23 percent shooting. Washington (20-8, 9-7 Pac-12) sank 11 three-pointers and shot 51 percent from the floor to split the regular-season series after WSU posted an 83-72 victory in Seattle Friday. The Cougars went 3-of-18 behind the arc and surrendered 16 points on 14 turnovers.
Junior forward Mariah Cooks led Washington State with nine points and senior guard Tia Presley added eight points and six rebounds. Junior guard Lia Galdeira finished with seven points and freshman forward Louise Brown brought down eight rebounds.
Washington jumped out of the gate to a 13-7 advantage, hitting three 3-pointers in the opening minutes. WSU answered as junior guard Dawnyelle Awa connected on a three from the right wing, junior guard Taylor Edmondson added a long jumper from the left wing and freshman guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou added her own jumper from the top of the key to make it a two-point game. UW countered with another three and later used a 10-0 run to build a double-digit lead at the 7:26 mark.
The Cougars struggled to get shots to fall over the final minutes of the first half but did receive a three from the freshman guard Caila Hailey in the right corner. Washington took a 41-26 lead into the half as the Cougars were held to 30 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes while UW shot over 48 percent including a seven 3-pointers.
Washington State made things interesting in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring six straight points to cut the UW lead to 11. Cooks sank two free throws, Presley got a runner to fall and Galdeira added two free throws that made it 45-34 at the 15:55 mark.
Just as the Cougars got within striking distance, the Huskies answered with a seven straight of their own including another three to push the lead back up to 18. The shooting struggles continued for Washington State as a number of shots rattled off the rim, allowing UW to pull away for good. WSU was held to 17 percent shooting in the second half while the Huskies shot over 55 percent in the final 20 minutes.
WSU will close out the regular season hosting UCLA next Thursday at 7 p.m. and USC next Saturday at 3 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
