Box Score

SEATTLE – Four players scored in double-figures for Washington State in an 83-72 road victory over rival University of Washington Friday.

The Cougars (15-11, 6-9 Pac-12) shot over 55 percent and hit six 3-pointers in the second half to erase a five-point halftime deficit and posts its third-straight win over Washington (19-8, 8-7 Pac-12).

Junior guard Lia Galdeira led Washington State with 23 points to along with eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Senior guard Tia Presley added 17 points and four assists, junior forward Mariah Cooks recorded 16 points and eight rebounds and junior point guard Dawnyelle Awa added 11 points including three 3-pointers in the deciding second-half run. Freshman forward Louise Brown registered seven points and 10 rebounds while playing 39 minutes in her first career game against Washington.

“I thought we played with great energy tonight,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty stated after the game. “We moved the basketball well and kind of wore them down in the second half. It was great to see Tia get going tonight, Dawny (Awa) played a huge role tonight, hitting big shots when they left her open. Lia once again showed everybody how special of a player she is, sharing the ball, setting up her teammates with assists and hitting some big shots.”

Washington State shot over 46 percent for the game, outrebounded UW 40-34 and scored 20 points off of 14 Husky turnovers. The Cougars notched their fourth win over a team in the NCAA RPI Top-50 this season beating Dayton (14), Maryland (5) and both Gonzaga (39) and UW on the road who had entered the night with a RPI of 22.

Washington State jumped out to an early lead, using some hot shooting highlighted by a 12-0 run to build a 17-4 advantage at the 15:14 mark. Presley started the run receiving a beautiful pass from Galdeira and finishing with the layup and Galdeira followed with a three from the right wing the next trip down. The ensuing possession saw Presley return the favor, delivering a pass to a cutting Galdeira for two before Presley hit a three of her own. Freshman guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou capped the streak with a fastbreak layup.

The Huskies countered with a couple runs, using two different 6-0 streaks to cut the WSU lead to 23-20 with 8:01 remaining. Washington State answered with a steal and layup by Galdeira before junior guard Taylor Edmondson knocked down at three to push the lead back up to eight. Minutes later, Galdeira scored on a drive and Presley opened up a nine-point lead with a free throw.

Washington came right back in a big way, closing the half on a 14-0 run, hitting a pair of threes during that span to take a 38-33 lead into the break. Galdeira and Presley each scored nine points in the first half while the Cougars were held to 38 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

WSU received a boost from Cooks in the opening minutes of the second half as the junior scored on a couple moves before Galdeira drove through the Husky defense and got her layup to fall as she was fouled. Galdeira sank the free throw to give the Cougars a 43-42 lead at the 16:30 mark.

Minutes later, Galdeira scored again on a driving layup and Cooks drained a three from the left wing to give Washington State a five-point lead and spark the Cougar offense. A baseline layup from Awa started an 8-0 run as Presley followed with a jumper from the left wing, Cooks then dished to a wide-open Galdeira under the basket for two points and Galdeira later capped the run with an acrobatic up-and-under layup against a UW post player, stunning the Alaska Airlines Arena crowd and pushing the WSU lead to 11 with 12:24 remaining.

Washington answered with a couple baskets but the Cougars put together a decisive 17-3 run by catching fire from the outside. Awa came up with the big shots, hitting a pair of threes from the right wing to slow the Washington comeback. Galdeira fed off Awa, her Hawaii high school teammate, hitting a three of her own before Brown got into the act, sinking a three from the left corner. Galdeira then added another jumper and Presley produced another big play for the Cougars, driving the baseline and getting her runner to fall as she was fouled. The senior sank the free throw that capped the run and pushed the lead to 22 with just over six minutes remaining.

Minutes later, a pair of buckets by the Huskies cut the lead to 15 but Awa sealed things up with her third 3-pointer of the night, hitting from straight away to keep the lead at 18 with three minutes remaining. Cooks added a basket late before gabbing an offensive rebound in the final seconds to close out the 82-72 victory.

The same two teams will head to Pullman to face off Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
