WSU Rowing Travels to Spokane: The Washington State women's rowing team will compete in its second regatta of the fall season traveling to Spokane, Wash. for the Head of the Spokane regatta at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River Saturday, Oct. 10.
The 2015 Head of the Spokane: Racing will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in head format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other...the Head of the Spokane is hosted by the Gonzaga men's and women's rowing teams...the race covers a 5,000-meter stretch of the Spokane River.
Last Year at the Head of the Spokane: Last year in Spokane, the Cougars competed against Gonzaga in their second regatta of the fall season…the WSU varsity eight recorded the fastest women's time of 16:39...Gonzaga's varsity eight finished second with a time of 16:46…WSU's second varsity eight crossed the finish line next with a time of 17:14, finishing third...WSU's third varsity eight had a time of 17:51…WSU out-stroked both Gonzaga's second varsity eight (17:56) and third varsity eight (18:39)...in a later heat, the Cougar novice eight B finished with a time of 21:46 just behind Gonzaga's novice eight team who finished first with a time of 19:35…WSU's novice eight C crossed the finish line with a time of 22:12, out-stroking Gonzaga's novice eight B boat (22:37)…the WSU novice eight boat did not finish the race.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Head of the Spokane: “It's the closest event where there's Division I competition and Gonzaga is always a worthy foe. It's also a regatta where we get a lot of parents, boosters, supporters and friends who make the trip up from Pullman or the trip over from the west side. So, it's usually kind of a festive environment."
Last Time on the Water: Washington State women's rowing competed in the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, in Burnaby, British Columbia…in the flight of pairs, WSU's A pair (Savannah Davison, Isabella Watt) recorded the second best time at 16:35…WSU's B pair (Jordan Watson, Morgan Cathrea) finished with a time of 17:15, while WSU's C pair (Lucie Weissova, Taija Thompson) crossed the finish line at 17:30…in the flight of pairs 250m sprint, WSU's A pair (Savannah Davison, Isabella Watt) finished second with a time of 53.79, just off the first place time of 53.62…in the flight of singles, WSU redshirt-senior Kayla Wakulich finished with a time of 18:22, behind the first place finisher at 17:37…Wakulich then took home second place in the 250m sprint with a time of 1:00, three seconds off the first place boat.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere begins her 14th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...the Cougars have raced in nine NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Josh Adam, novice coach Karl Huhta and graduate assistant coach Brandon Campbell...Adam is in his sixth year after coaching his prior two years at Indiana...Huhta is in his second year with the Cougars and first as the novice coach...Campbell enters his first year as an graduate assistant coach.
Next up for the Cougars: WSU will close out the fall season Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Head of the Lake, hosted by Washington.
