Washington State Falls To No. 18 Arizona State in Tempe

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. – Washington State had three players score in double figures but dropped a 78-64 road contest to No. 18 Arizona State at Wells Fargo Arena Monday.

The Cougars (10-3, 1-1 Pac-12) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end as junior guard Lia Galdeira led WSU with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Tia Presley finished with 15 points and junior guard Dawnyelle Awa added 10. Arizona State (13-1, 2-0 Pac-12) scored the game's first nine points, shot nearly 53 percent from the floor and had four players score in double figures to snap a four-game losing streak to the Cougars. WSU shot 46 percent from the field, forced 24 turnovers but surrendered 22 points off of a season-high 23 turnovers.

Arizona State opened the game with nine straight points and later built up a 17-4 advantage after shooting nearly 70 percent for much of the first half. The Cougars began to chip away midway through the half as junior guard Taylor Edmondson drained a three from the right wing and Awa got her layup to fall high off the glass as she finished the first 20 minutes with six points.

Galdeira started the heat up late in the half, sinking a jumper from the baseline before hitting a three from the right corner to bring WSU within 31-20 at the 6:21 mark. Things got interesting a couple possessions after the three as a scramble for a loose ball saw a couple players fighting for possession that resulted in an ASU foul and a technical foul on Galdeira. Both sides calmed down and the Cougars seemed to settle in offensively as Presley got a pair of runners to fall, Cooks made a nice spin move for a bucket and Awa capped the half with a three from the right corner.

ASU held a 43-29 lead at the break after shooting over 60 percent from the floor and took advantage for 11 WSU turnovers, scoring 10 points off those miscues. Galdeira tallied 11 points in the first half as WSU shot over 45 percent from the floor.

Washington State opened the second half with a 6-2 streak as a baseline jumper from senior center Shalie Dheensaw cut the ASU lead to 11. The Sun Devils answered with three free throws and stayed hot from the outside, always seeming to answer the Cougars anytime they would make a run.

WSU closed the gap to 10 a couple occasions but Arizona State continued to knock down shots, using a 6-0 spurt after a Presley three at the four minute mark to put the game away for good.

Washington State hosts the Bay Area schools next weekend in Beasley Coliseum, the University of California Friday at 5 p.m. and Stanford University Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
