Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to post a 73-68 Pac-12 Conference victory over the University of Colorado at Beasley Coliseum Sunday.
The Cougars (13-6, 4-4 Pac-12) scored 25 points off of 27 turnovers, made 20 steals and sank 33-of-39 free throw attempts to post its third-straight win. Colorado shot 50 percent from the floor and held Washington State to a season-low 25 percent shooting percentage but surrendered a 12-point lead in the second half to fall to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Washington State welcomed back and recognized a number of former women's basketball players during halftime and postgame including all-time leading scorer Jeanne Eggart, all-time blocks leader Carly Noyes and former head coach Sue Durant.
Junior guard Lia Galdeira scored a team-high 27 points, her tenth 20-point game of the season, grabbed five rebounds, matched a career-high with seven steals and went 12-of-14 at the free throw line. Junior forward Mariah Cooks added a season-high 15 points while sinking 9-of-10 at the charity stripe to go along with six rebounds. Senior guard Tia Presley added 14 points, going 7-for-7 at the free throw line for the second straight game, along with a career-high six steals. Junior guard Taylor Edmondson chipped in nine points.
Washington State struggled in the first half, shooting just 18 percent from the floor including 2-for-10 from beyond the arc. Colorado opened the game hot and stayed that way, shooting 56 percent in the first half but the Cougars hung around, forcing 14 turnovers and connecting on 11-of-13 trips to the free throw line.
Just as Washington State started the heat up late in half, using a 9-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, the Buffaloes came right back with nine straight points of their own to regain an eight points lead at the 5:05 mark. The Cougars knocked their free throws during that stretch but CU scored the final four points of the half to take a 37-27 advantage into the break.
Colorado opened the second half extending its lead to 12 and held a double-digit lead until WSU began its comeback. Trailing 52-41 at the 11:37 mark, Washington State made its move, using a 14-5 run to cut the lead to three. Cooks started the run with a pair of free throws, Galdeira added a free throw and then a fastbreak layup, Edmondson connected on a three from the right wing and Cooks followed with an old fashioned three-point play, grabbing an offensive rebound, quickly going back up for a bucket as she was fouled. Cooks hit the free throw and Galdeira capped the run by hitting a jumper as she was fouled, connecting on the free throw to make it a 57-54 Colorado lead with 8:34 remaining.
The Buffs rattled off six straight points a couple minutes later to own an eight-point lead at the 4:58 mark but the Colorado coach was issued a technical foul after Galdeira was fouled after making a steal. Galdeira sank all four free throw attempts, cutting the CU lead to one and WSU went on a 13-0 game-changing run. Freshman forward Louise Brown followed with a two free throws, Cooks followed with an acrobatic up-an-under layup and Galdeira ended the streak with a free throw for a 70-65 Cougar lead with remaining.
Colorado would hit a three to cut the WSU lead to two with 41 seconds left but Cooks won a battle for an offensive rebound on the ensuing possession, forcing CU to foul with four seconds left. Cooks sank both, the Cougars forced one final turnover and received one more free throw from freshman guard Caila Hailey to seal up the 73-68 win.
