Micaela Castain Leads Cougars Past Vandals

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State senior Micaela Castain tied her career high with six points and the Cougars routed visiting Idaho 5-0 in nonconference soccer, Friday.

Castain tallied a pair of goals, one in each half, to go along with a two-first half assists. Her other six-point match came at Weber State in 2010 when she recorded a hat trick. The Castro Valley, Calif., native moved into fourth place all-time at Washington State (2-0-0) with 25 goals and is tied for sixth on the Cougar career list with 55 points.

“Micaela is a special player,” Cougar Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “We had a great intensity as a team, especially in the first half. A lot of people logged minutes today, which is always a good thing.”

The match was essentially over at halftime with Washington State scoring four goals before intermission. The Cougars outshot the Vandals (0-3-0) 22-3 and earned all-seven corner kicks in the match.

Cara Wegner, a sophomore transfer from Oregon, gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute with her first-career goal. Castain beat two defenders on the right side before crossing the ball to Wegner, who finished inside the near post.

The Cougars built their lead to 3-0 with two goals just 72 seconds apart. In the 24th minute, Castain played the ball to sophomore Kourtney Guetlein on the left side. Guetlein sent a cross to the far post that junior Nicole Setterlund buried under the crossbar. Castain scored Washington State's third goal when she slotted the ball past the goalkeeper from 16 yards out on assists from freshman Kailiana Johnson and redshirt-senior Kayla Johnson.

Setterlund and Kailiana Johnson played give-and-go in the 41st minute for the Cougars' fourth goal with Johnson scoring from the top of the box.

In the 66th minute, junior Korynn Blanksma played a ball wide to junior Mesa Owsley. A cross from the left to the far post was headed home by Castain off the left post.

Washington State concludes its weekend hosting Eastern Washington, Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
