MOSCOW, Idaho – The Washington State swimming team edged the Vandals of Idaho 152-142 in a dual meet Saturday, claiming its first victory of the season.

The Cougars jumped ahead early with a victory in the first event, the 200 medley relay. The relay team of Emma Johansson, Frederikke Hall, Alison Mand, and Haley Rose Love completed the race in 1:45.17 to claim first place and put the Cougars on the board. Washington State also finished first in the 400 free relay to end the meet, with Haley Rose Love, Nicole Proulx, Johansson, and Kelly Tannhauser contributing to a winning relay time of 3:28.33

Cougar freshman Elise Locke was again a top performer in distance events for Washington State. Locke championed the 1000 free with a time of 10:28.58, and also placed first in the 500 free with a time of 5:04.51. Fellow freshman Love claimed the top spot in two freestyle events as well. In the 100 free, Love swam a 52.12 for first place, and in the 50 free her time of 23.96 was good enough for first.

Senior Emma Johansson tabbed two first-place finishes as well. Johansson placed first in the 100 back (56.16) and the 100 fly (55.57).

The next competition for the Cougars will be a dual meet against Seattle on Nov. 1 in Seattle.
