Cougar Men's Golf Beats All But One

FRESNO, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team outplayed 10 teams ranked higher than it in the GolfStat rankings, including Arizona which is currently ranked 48th in the nation, to place second in the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Tuesday.

In the three-round tournament, the Cougars had the best finishes of any team in the first and third rounds. Their first round score of 351 was their lowest round they have played yet this season. The Washington State team finished the final round with a team score of 376 (+16), putting it at a 3-round total of 1093 (+13).

Oregon State won the tournament with a cumulative score of 7-over 1087. San Diego's Alex Ching walked away with the top individual honors, with a 3-round total 209, 7-under par.

Senior Trent Sanders and freshman Michael Anderson shared the top Cougar honors, coming in tied for eigth, both carding a 1-over 217 for the tournament.

The best Washington State finish in the final round came from senior Branden Dalton and sophomore Kent Hagen, who both shot a 2-over 74. Dalton finished the tournament tied for 27th (221, +5) and Hagen ended up tied for 14th (219, +3).

Other Cougars competing were redshirt-freshman Sang Lee, tied for 22nd (220, +4) and junior Hank Frame, tied for 68th (229, +13).

"We played great golf," commented Washington State Head Coach Garrett Clegg. "The conditions today were brutally difficult, but the guys fought really hard to finish strong. I'm really proud of our performance, we beat some really good teams today."

The Washington State men's golf team returns to action March 18-20, when it travels to Sarasota, Fla., to compete in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship.
