IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Washington State swim team remains in sixth place after the second day of competition at the Hawkeye Invitational, Saturday.
The Cougars competed in the preliminary rounds in the morning where 11 WSU swimmers qualified for finals in multiple events. Four Cougars finished in the top ten of their heats including freshman Loree Olson who finished tenth in the 400 IM. Shelbi Luchini finished the 100 fly in tenth behind teammate Emma Johansson who came in second in the event earning an NCAA "B" standard time (54.04). Johansson also finished eighth in the 100 backstroke.
WSU had a strong showing in the finals of day two. Nicole Proulx had a strong swim anchoring the 200 medley relay swimming 23.22 in the freestyle leg. Olson came in first in the "B" final of the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.89 which is a new personal record for the freshman as well as an NCAA "B' standard time. Johansson and Luchini stepped up for the Cougs finishing second (53.85) and ninth (55.82) respectively in the 100 fly. Alison Mand and Johansson both finished fourth in the "A" and "B" finals respectively of the 100 backstroke with Johansson earning another NCAA "B" standard time of 54.91.
"We had another strong night," said WSU Head Coach Tom Jager "there were three B cuts from Emma (Johansson) and Loree (Olson) so that was pretty good."
After day two of the invitational, the Cougars are sixth overall with a team score of 209. Currently, Michigan is leading the competition, posting a team score of 558. The Cougars return to the pool for the final day of competition on Sunday, Prelims at 8a.m. and Finals at 4p.m. Pacific.
