RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Sophomore guard Tia Presley recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds for Washington State University who dropped a 71-65 road contest at UC Riverside Wednesday.
The Cougars (2-4) made 12 steals and forced UC Riverside (4-2) into 16 turnovers but the Highlanders used a strong second half, shooting 48.0 percent from the floor in the second half to post the victory.
Both teams traded runs in the first half as Presley and freshman forward Mariah Cooks led WSU with 13 and nine points in the first 20 minutes. Cooks came off the bench to spark the Cougars, hitting four of her five shots in the first half. Following Washington State's 7-0 run, the Highlanders closed the half with an 8-4 run to send the game into the half tied at 34.
The Cougars withstood UCR' shot start to the second period, eventually answering with an 11-2 run behind a driving layup from Cooks and a three from freshman guard Taylor Edmondson. Two free throws from sophomore forward Shalie Dheensaw followed a UCR bucket and junior forward Hana Potter later added a nice spin move in the low post and Presley capped the run with a steal and going coast-to-coast for a layin and a 57-52 lead at the 9:02 mark.
The Highlanders came right back with an 11-0 run highlighted by three from behind the arc that proved to be the difference. The Cougars struggled to regain the momentum following the UCR run and the Highlanders were able to hold off WSU's comeback.
Washington State continues its road trip with a match up at Fresno State, 7 p.m. Friday.
GAME NOTES
Noyes made career start No. 94, seventh-most in WSU history...Presley held UCR's Tre'Shonti Nottingham to 14 points on 3-of-9 shooting after Nottingham came into the contest leading the country in scoring at 27.6 ppg...Cooks registered a career-high 11 points...Carly Noyes made one block to up her career total to 134, good for second all-time in WSU history.
