TEMPE, Ariz. - Washington State junior swimmer Emma Johansson led Washington State to a split, Saturday against Arizona State and Grand Canyon.
Johansson posted the 13th-best time in NCAA Division I swimming this season with a 54.82 in the 100 butterfly. She also swam a lifetime best 55.93 in the 100 backstroke, the third-fastest time in Cougar history. The Bjarred, Sweden native captured both events as Washington State defeated Grand Canyon 160.5-99.5 and lost to Arizona State 170-88.
"Emma (Johansson) gave us a great effort," Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager said. "We swam really well as a team and finished strong. We are showing toughness and starting to get an identity. We have a long way to go, but I like the direction we are headed."
Taylor Indahl and Kelly Tannhauser each earned a second place finish for the Cougars. Indahl touched the wall at 2:26.43 in the 200 breast while Tannhauser clocked a 2:08.21 in the 200 individual medley.
Washington State posted five third place finishes, including a pair by Loree Olson. A freshman, Olson was the Cougars' top performer in the 200 back at 2:05.05 and was behind Tannhauser in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.68.
Other third place finishes by Washington State were recorded by Shanell Sullenberger (1:07.95/100 breast), Nicole Proulx (52.24/100 free) and Kelsey Bruggman (56.99/100 fly).
The Cougars will be in Los Angeles next week for dual meets with UCLA (Nov. 2) and USC (Nov. 3)
