First-Day Results 
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State University swimming team opened the Pac-10 Championships, Wednesday, competing in two relay events during opening-day action.
In the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay team of Emma Johansson, Marina Ruiz Jimenez, Evelina Bieleckaite and Melissa Bogert earned sixth-place points after finishing in a time of 1:44.67.
Talor Whitaker, Rugile Mileisyte, Emma Neely and Jennifer Dean represented the Cougars in the second and final event of the night, the 800 freestyle relay. The team finished seventh, touching the wall in 7:20.70.
Whitaker swam the lead-off leg for the Cougars and completed her 200-yard swim in a time of 1:49.17. The finish was not only a lifetime best for the senior, but it also moved her up to fourth place on the WSU all-time list.
"In the 800 free relays everyone went out a little bit too hard and too fast," said head coach Erica Quam. "We just need to get settled in and I think we will be able to do that tomorrow."
Five WSU freshmen got their first taste of competition on the conference championships stage, including Seattle native Anne Kenney, who recorded the fastest 50 freestyle time of any WSU swimmer in the 200 freestyle relay.
WSU is currently tied with Oregon State for fifth place with 94 points. Second-day action will begin Thursday with the 11 a.m. preliminary session, followed by the finals session, beginning at 6 p.m.
