BERKELEY, Calif. - In a Pac-12 dual meet, the Washington State swim team was defeated by California, the defending NCAA Champion, Friday.

The undefeated Golden Bears outscored the Cougars 160-89. With the loss, Washington State fell to 0-4 in dual meets this season.

"We swam really well," Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager said. "It was really cool and somewhat intimidating to swim against the number one team in this country, but our team held their own. They didn't give up and they didn't give in. They swam well all the way through the very last race."

Junior Shelbi Luchini earned Washington State's top scoring honors, bringing in 12 individual points. Luchini scored points in the 200 fly, 200 breast, and 200 IM.

The best Cougar finishes of the day came from senior Danielle Palumbo, when she touched the wall third in both the 100 and 200 back with times of 58.79 and 2:05.38, respectively.

Other stand-out performances came from Washington State senior Emma Neely and junior teammate Evelina Bieleckaite. Neely placed fourth in the 200 free (1:53.72) and fifth the 500 free (5:10.72). Bieleckaite clocked a time of 24.37 in the 50 free, finishing fourth. Neely and Bieleckiate were two of 14 Cougars who contributed to the team score.

Washington State swimming returns to the pool Nov. 21 when it travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to take on Northern Arizona.
