Individuals Shine for Cougar Swimming

SALT LAKE CITY - Shelbi Luchini, Evelina Bieleckaite and Danielle Palumbo each recorded an individual victory for the Washington State swimming team at Utah, Saturday.

Despite the individual accolades, the Cougars were defeated by the Utes 147-115. With the loss, Washington State fell to 0-3 in dual meets this season.

"Our sprinters swam really well," Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager said. "We had some terrific individual performances and we finished our races great. We are in great physical shape right now."

Luchini and Palumbo tied for Washington State's top scoring honors with 13 points each. Luchini won the 200 fly in 2:09.02 and finished second in the 500 free. Palumbo captured the 200 back in 2:04.82 and placed fourth in the 100 back and 200 IM.

Bieleckaite touched the wall first in the 50 free with a time of 24.31 and finished fourth in the 100 free for an 11-point day.

Overall, 16 Cougars contributed to the team score. Washington State logged eight second-place finishes, including a pair by Jessie Craig (100 breast and 200 breast).

The Cougars return to action, Friday, Nov. 4 with a 1 p.m. meet at California.
