Men's Golf Takes Second at Purple and Red Invitational

LAYTON, Utah - Led by a dominant performance from redshirt-freshman Kyle Hurt, the Washington State University men's golf team finishes second at the Purple and Red Invitational, Tuesday.

Hurt finished tied for third shooting a 73 (+1) in the final round. "Kyle played fantastic and is really improving fast, he is a solid player," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

The Cougars carded a three-round total of 858 (-6), one stroke short of first place behind Sacramento State. WSU finished ahead of Portland, Weber State, Boise State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Northern Colorado, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Air Force, Utah, British Columbia, Utah Valley, UC Riverside and Southern Utah.

Three other Cougars finished in the top 25; junior Trent Sanders and freshman Kent Hagen tied for 15th shooting a 216 (E) and sophomore Hank Frame finished tied for 24th carding a 218 (+2).

Junior Paul Mitzel finished tied for 61st shooting a 76 (+4) in the final round.

For the first time in his career at WSU, senior Nick Ellis missed a tournament due to a foot injury. "We definitely needed Nick today and hope we can get him healed up and back in the line up soon," said Williams.

The Cougars have a short rest period, they are headed to the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 25-26.
