CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State women's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start against Oregon State Saturday, ultimately falling 60-35 to the Beavers at Gill Coliseum. The Cougars fell to 3-15 on the season and 0-7 in the Pacific-10 Conference, and the Beavers improved to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in league play.
"I thought we did a pretty good job on their inside game and on a couple of their shooters," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "We just have to do a better job of communicating as a team. We will work on it and get better."
The Beavers jumped out to a 14-0 lead, holding the Cougars scoreless for the first 7 minutes, 28 seconds of the game. WSU finally got on the board at with 12:32 on the clock when sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge hit the second of two free throws. Junior guard Katie Appleton recorded the Cougars' first field goal at 10:03.
Oregon State's 3-point shooting kept the Cougars from cutting into its lead. The Beavers connected on 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) attempts from beyond the arc. The Cougars, ranked third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage entering the week, hit just 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) on the night.
Appleton led the Cougar offense with nine points, and with her 3-pointer moved into a tie with Darci Wellsandt (1990-93) for eighth place on the WSU all-time list for career 3-point field goals (95).
Junior forward Heather Molzen led WSU with six rebounds as the Cougars outrebounded the Beavers 19-28.
"Rebounding was definitely an area of improvement for us tonight, but we can always do better," Daugherty said. "We need to work a bit on our boxing out."
WSU returns to Friel Court next week, hosting Arizona, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., and Arizona State, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
