PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State freshman Jasmine Williams led the Cougars in scoring for the first time in her career, but despite a strong second half the Cougars were unable to come back from a first-half deficit and fell to UCLA 76-56 Saturday, at Friel Court.
WSU fell to 3-13 on the season and 0-5 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while UCLA improved to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Bruins shot 65.5-percent from the field in the first half (19-of-29), including 6-of-9 from the 3-point line (66.7-percent), to take a 56-23 lead into halftime. The Cougar defense held the Bruins to 24.1-percent from the field in the second half, however, and the Cougar offense outscored UCLA 33-20 in the second stanza.
"It's disappointing that we didn't come out in the first half," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "They were on fire from the 3-point line, but when teams are on rolls like that you have to weather the storm. I thought in the second half we came out and played better. I was especially happy to see our bench outscore their bench.
The Cougar bench outscored the Bruins' 16-13 on the game. WSU also outrebounded the Bruins in the second half 23-21.
Williams tied her career high, scoring 11 points for the second consecutive game. The 5-foot-9 guard also tied a team high with seven rebounds. Junior forward Heather Molzen also pulled down seven boards, one off of her career high.
WSU hits the road again after its recent three-game home stand to play Oregon (Jan. 17) and Oregon State (Jan. 19). Tip-off against both the Ducks and Beavers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
