STANFORD, Calif. --- Washington State's Jennifer Dodd and Tasha Browner shot a pair of 76's Friday in the first round of the Peg Barnard California Collegiate to help the Cougars to eighth place in the field of 11 teams.
Dodd and Browner are tied with six other players in 10th place. The Cougar duo is five strokes off the lead, which belongs to San Francisco's Susannah Laing.
Three other Washington State players, sophomore Shanelle Roberts and freshmen Natalie Bratkowski and Emily De'Ath, shot 82's to open the event. The Cougars combined for a 316, and will try to make up ground on the seventh place team, Nevada. The Wolf Pack own a five-stroke advantage on WSU after a first-round 311.
Stanford, who is hosting the tournament, will head into the second and final round with a three-shot lead on second place California. Washington and San Jose State are tied for fourth at 306.
Play will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.
