Brittney Hawks recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Washington State women's basketball team's 64-37 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers at the Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge at Bank of America Arena, Sunday.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-7 while Indiana improved to 5-3.
Hawks' performance against the Hoosiers was the third consecutive and eighth career double-double posted by the senior from Rexburg, Idaho. For the season, Hawks is averaging 11.2 points and 9.6 rebounds a game.
Freshman Francine McCurtain added nine points for WSU and junior Jessica Ottmar chipped in seven. Indiana's Heather Cassidy led all scorers with 15 points and Jill Chapman posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hoosiers.
Both teams struggled from the field during the game, as the Cougars hit on 15-of-56 attempts (26.8 percent) while Indiana converted on 23-of-64 attempts (35.9 percent). The basket was especially a tough target to find for both teams in the first half, as the Cougars shot 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from the floor while Indiana was 10-of-32 (31.3 percent).
Down early 5-2 at the 17:17 mark of the first half, WSU went on a 6-2 run over the next five minutes to take an 8-7 lead at the 12:17 mark of the half. After both teams exchanged baskets, Indiana would outscore the Cougars 12-1 over a 10:10 span to go ahead 21-11 with 1:53 left in the half.
WSU would slice Indiana's lead to 26-19 at the halftime break on the strength of a pair of McCurtain three-pointers.
The Cougars would get to within 29-23 at the 17:50 mark of the second half before Indiana went on a 22-4 run to put the game away.
