Cougar Rowing to Face Cross-State Rivals: No. 11 Washington State rowing is home for the second-straight week, hosting No. 5 Washington...the Cougars square off with their cross-state rivals at Wawawai Landing, Friday April 10, with racing scheduled to begin at 4 p.m...the regatta’s start time was moved up a day due to expected inclement weather, Saturday.
The 2015 Washington Dual: Boats will compete in a two-kilometer race that takes place on the Snake River...men’s racing between WSU and UW starts at 4 p.m. with the varsity/second varsity eight heat...the Cougar and Husky women highlight the 4:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. time slots, with the varsity eight and second varsity eight heats, respectively...the men’s novice eight race will start at 4:45 p.m., followed by the women’s third varsity eight at 5 p.m...men’s varsity four action starts at 5:15 p.m., followed by the women’s varsity four race at 5:30 p.m...the final two races of the day are the men’s second novice eight at 5:45 p.m., and the women’s fourth varsity eight at 6 p.m.
Last Season Against Washington: Last season at Seattle, then No. 12 Washington State fell just short in all five races against No. 5 Washington...the second varsity eights provided one of the closest races of the day, as the Huskies edged the Cougars by only a half of a second...the WSU second varsity eight finished with a time of 6:38.46...the Cougar varsity eight finished just five seconds behind the Huskies, after WSU finished in 6:22.60 and UW crossed the line at 6:17.52....the WSU varsity and second varsity eights each closed the gap with Washington after racing a week earlier at the San Diego Crew Classic...the varsity eight shaved three seconds off the Huskies’ previous margin of victory, and the second varsity eight finished two seconds closer...the Cougars finished third and fourth in the varsity four race, with the Huskies’ varsity and second varsity four boats narrowly edging the Cougar varsity and second varsity four boats...the WSU varsity four finished in 7:20.69 and the second varsity four in 7:29.30...in the open eight race, WSU finished less than three seconds behind UW’s second open eight and seven seconds behind the UW open eight.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere On Racing Washington: “It might be kind of boring, but it’s the same expectation week in, and week out, and that’s just to get better from the last time we had a chance to race. So far, we’ve been pretty sucessful at that, and we’ve figured out a couple of little areas that we want to get better at. We’ll try to improve in those areas and keep being consistent.”
Cougars Ranked 11th in USRowing/CRCA Poll: WSU is currently ranked 11th in the nation in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells... Washington State’s No. 11 ranking marks the highest two-week ranking for the Cougars, since they were ranked No. 10 in back-to-back weeks, April 21-May 5, 2010...WSU is ranked for the 71st-consecutive week, dating back to June 11, 2008...all seven of the Pac-12’s women’s rowing teams are ranked in the top-20 poll: California-third, Washington-fifth, Stanford-sixth, USC-10th, WSU-11th, UCLA-14th, and Oregon State-17th.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere is in her 13th year as head coach of the WSU women’s rowing program...the Cougars have raced in nine NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Josh Adam, novice coach Devon Carroll, assistant coach Corrie McGrath and coordinator of operations Karl Huhta...Adam is in his fifth year after coaching his prior two years at Indiana...Carroll is in her third year with the Cougars and first as the novice coach...McGrath is in her seventh year at WSU, after coaching stints at Clemson and Central Florida...Huhta is in his first year as coordinator of operations and third year overall, after being a volunteer coach in 2009-10.
