Washington State Athletics Hosts Special Olympics Basketball

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University Athletics, in partnership with Special Olympics Washington and Swire Coca-Cola, is hosting the Special Olympics East Regional Basketball Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 7.

The tournament will take place from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Bohler Athletic Complex, Physical Education Building and Smith Gym on the WSU campus..

The WSU Student-Athlete Development Unit and SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) are spearheading the university’s efforts in lending support to the event.

“The partnership between WSU Athletics and Special Olympics is in its third year and as strong as ever,” said WSU Coordinator of Career Development and community Services Kari Sampson. “To have our student-athletes and staff willing to take part in such a tremendous event and be able positively impact the lives of so many is a testament to their great character.”

More than 250 WSU student-athletes, staff and members of the Pullman community are volunteering for Saturday’s event.

According to Jill Ives, Sports & Training Manager East Region, Special Olympics Washington, 750 athletes will compete in Saturday’s regional tournament, one of four throughout the state, in three divisions (junior, ages 8-15; senior, ages 16-21; and master, ages 22 and up). The winners of each division advance to play the winners of each of the other three regions at the winter games in Wenatchee, Feb. 27 - March 1.

Admission is free to the public.
