Mary Markey, who played for Washington State Head Coach Jenny Przekwas at St. Francis College (Pa.) from 1995-98, reunites with her former coach as an assistant to the Cougar women's basketball coaching staff.
Markey comes to Pullman after most recently having played professionally in Switzerland the past two years. During her time in Europe, Markey was recognized as the league's 1998-99 outstanding defensive post player and she participated in the 1999-2000 Swiss National Cup.
In her four-year career at St. Francis, Markey was a member of three NEC championship teams from 1996-98 and averaged 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. She was named the 1997 Northeast Conference (NEC) most valuable player after averaging 17.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.8 steals a game.
Furthermore, Markey earned first-team All-NEC accolades (1997, `98) and NEC Tournament MVP nods (1996, `98).
In addition, Markey was a four-time NEC all-tournament team selection and was the 1995 NEC Newcomer of the Year after averaging 10.2 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. During her collegiate career, Markey earned five NEC player of the week awards and during her freshman season earned three NEC newcomer of the week awards.
Markey, who earned a bachelor's degree in management while at St. Francis, was selected to the athletic department's academic honor roll four times.
At Southern Huntington High School, Markey averaged 18.2 points and 14.7 rebounds per game leading the Lady Rockets to a 27-4 record her senior season. Markey led her team to a second place Class AA District VI finish and a berth in the western finals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state tournament. A two-time Juniata Valley League first-team selection and a second-team pick as a sophomore, Markey finished as Southern Huntington's all-time leader in scoring (1,735), rebounding (1,340), blocks (260), and steals (334). During Markey's three-year high school career, Southern Huntington posted a 71-15 record.
