WSU Opens Up the Spring Season in Dual Action against Bulldogs:
The Washington State University women's rowing team will kick off the 2013 spring season against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Wawawai Landing in Pullman, Wash., March 30 at 9 a.m. The No. 18 Cougars recently participated in its annual Class Day Races, but this will be the first competitive event of the year.
The Fawley Cup:
Washington State and Gonzaga meet each spring to compete for control of the Fawley Cup with the winner of the varsity eight event earning the rights to the Cup for its respective school...last year marked the 21st anniversary of the competition for the Fawley Cup...WSU has won 19 of the 21 spring matchups for the Fawley Cup and has won four-straight dating back to 2009...the 2008 dual was cancelled due to inclement weather...Gonzaga last won the Cup in 2007.
Last Year Against Gonzaga:
The Cougars had their second taste of dual action against the Bulldogs in Medical Lake, Wash., April 21, 2012...Washington State took victories in all six events including the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, novice eight, and second novice eight events...the varsity eight bested Gonzaga with a time of 6:32.57, claiming the Fawley Cup for a fourth-consecutive year.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Gonzaga Dual:
"The excitement has been building since spring break. We're really excited to have Gonzaga come down here. It's the first year in quite some time we have had two home races...this is our opening race and it is going to be great to get out, practice the plan, and get ready for San Diego."
Fall Recap:
The Cougars enjoyed a successful 2012 fall season... WSU took to the water in Priest River for the Head of the Pend Oreille... Boosted by the beautiful weather and festive atmosphere, the Cougars won both the varsity four flight and the varsity eight flight... At the Head of Spokane, the Cougars posted the top women's time in the varsity eight and varsity four flights... WSU claimed first-place in all four races at the Porland Fall Classic, out-stroking Pac-12 opponent Oregon State in the varsity eight, junior varsity eight, and varsity four events... The Cougars finished out the fall season at the Head of the Lake with victories over Washington in the varsity four and third varsity eight events.
Cougs Ranked 18th in USRowing/CRCA Poll:
WSU is currently ranked T-18th in the nation with Louisville and Columbia in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells...six of the Pac-12's seven rowing squads are ranked in the top-20 poll (Cal-second, USC-fourth, Washington-fifth, UCLA-eighth, Stanford-ninth, WSU-T-18th) and Oregon State received one vote...Washington State finished sixth in the conference and ranked 17th at the end of 2012...the Cougars return five rowers from last season's varsity eight boat.
Coaching Staff:
Jane LaRiviere is in her 11th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...the Cougars have raced in six NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by assistant Josh Adam, and novice coach Corrie McGrath...Adam is in his third year after coaching his prior two years at Indiana...McGrath is in her fifth year at WSU, after coaching stints at Clemson and Central Florida.

From Highway 195 (North or South), turn west on Wawawai Road at the blinking yellow light...travel on Wawawai Road for 10 miles, the road will end at a stop sign...turn right and drive six miles down into the canyon...go past the county park on the right and over the railroad tracks...the boathouse is a cinderblock building on the right...park on the side of the road or in the parking lot south of the boathouse.
