Rosenblad 4th, Clinkenbeard 6th After Pac-10 Heptathlon First Day

May 13, 2000

EUGENE, Ore. -- Two Washington State women had solid first days in their debuts in the heptathlon at the Pacific-10 Conference Multi-Events Championships Saturday, at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

Agneta Rosenblad, a junior from Lidingo, Sweden, is in fourth place with 2,935 points, and Cicely Clinkenbeard, a junior from Okanogan, Wash., is in sixth place with 2,847 points. California's Missy Vanek leads the ten-woman field with 3,248 points.

Rosenblad started her first heptathlon with a bang, by winning the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.86 seconds. After placing last in the high jump and the shot put, Rosenblad came back with a win in the 200m dash in a personal-best time of 24.62 seconds. During her WSU career, Rosenblad has hurdled, long jumped and run in sprint races.

Clinkenbeard was 10th in the hurdles, fourth in the high jump, third in the shot put and fifth in the 200m dash. Clinkenbeard is a triple and long jumper for the Cougar women during the season.

"Agneta had good hurdles and 200 but did beginner's work on the in-between events," Cougar head coach Rick Sloan said. "Cicley's hurdles were a little bit slower than we thought it would be (16.49 seconds) but it was her first hurdles race and we didn't know what to expect. She just barely missed at 5-5 3/4 in the high jump. Her shot put mark of 35-8 3/4 was a surprise."

Sunday's competition concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800m run.

"They did a good job of competing," Sloan summarized. "We're going to open up with big long jumps Sunday. I think we can move up the ladder a little bit, though there are some other good jumpers in here. If we can get 8 to 10 points out of the heptathlon, that's what we're looking for. Want to be competitive."
