First-Half Flurry Propels Cougs to Victory

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer team defeated the Seattle Redhawks, 4-2 Wednesday night at Lower Soccer Field, beginning the West Coast Conference schedule with a win. The Cougars scored four first-half goals, including the fastest goal of the season and a pair of goals less than 40 seconds apart, to secure a third-straight win over Seattle.

The Cougars wasted no time, scoring in the 4th minute when Abigail Siddall notched the fastest Wazzu goal of the 2025 season. Siddall scored her second goal in three matches, turning near the right post from a tight angle and scoring with a ricochetted shot off the far left post and in. The graduate student scored after fellow redshirt-senior Jordyn Young played an errant clearance back into the box. Young earned her first career WSU assist and her first assist since her freshman season at California in 2021.

Sophomore Audrey Shackelford doubled the WSU lead in the 25th minute, collecting a loose ball near midfield. Shackelford turned and split four defenders, dribbling up the midfield directly at goal, before firing home an unassisted rocket from the top of the box for her second goal of the season.

Just before halftime, Washington State scored a pair of goals in quick succession, beginning with a 43rd minute penalty conversion from redshirt-freshman Keira Mitchell. The Nevada native stepped up and slotted home her first career goal with a powerful strike into the upper netting.

With the Cougars still celebrating their third goal, WSU pressed forward as Ana de los Santos played a wide through ball to fellow freshman Isabelle Wright. Wright took a first-time touch with her left foot, squaring the ball across goal to a wide-open Journey Middleborn. Middleborn slotted home her first career goal, giving WSU its second goal in under 40 seconds.

In the second half, the Redhawks earned a pair of unassisted goals in the 59th and 77th minute courtesy of Zoe Hopkins. The Cougars controlled 52 percent of possession, and outshot Seattle 14-11, including 8-3 in the opening stanza.

WSU continues its conference-opening homestand Saturday, September 27, hosting Santa Clara at 7 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field. The match, celebrating 'Socctoberfest' will stream live on ESPN+.
