LOS ANGELES (April 5, 2025) – Despite capturing the opening doubles point, Washington State could not capitalize as Loyola Marymount won four singles matches in route to a 4-2 win over the Cougars in a West Coast Conference match Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cougars dropped their first WCC match and fall to 13-6 overall, 3-1 in WCC play. LMU improves to 5-10, 3-2 in conference.
 
The Cougars struck first by winning the opening doubles point. Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov at No. 3 jumped out early then cruised to a 6-3 win over LMU's Fiona Arrese and Martina Bovio. The Lions found the equalizer on Court 2 where Isabve Tcherkes-Zade and Kim-Michaela Zahraj posted a 6-2 win over Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki, pushing the deciding match to Court 1. There, WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy rode an early break to a 6-4 win over Anastasia Bozova and Ste Rogozinska-Dzik, giving WSU the early 1-0 lead.
 
As singles began, LMU quickly tied the score at 1-1 as Tcherkes-Zade had little trouble in defeating Martina Puvill, 6-2, 6-1 on Court 6. The Lions lead grew to 3-1 following Bozova's 6-3, 6-4 win over Murphy at No. 2 and Camila Samel-Druz recording a 6-1, 1-6,6 -4 win over Tse on Court 3.
 
WSU drew to 3-2 as Kanemaki defeated Zahraj 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 on Court 5 but the Cougars could not complete the comeback as Rogozinska-Dzik outlasted Alvarez Sande 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 1, after the Cougar junior saved three match points but could not find a fourth. The final match on Court 4 between Abouelsaad and Arrese was stopped in the third-set tiebreaker once the team outcome was decided.
 
The Cougars continue their Southern California swing by facing No. 23 Pepperdine Sunday at Noon.
