Cougs Clinch Seven Wins in First Day of Cougar Classic

| By:
PULLMAN, Wash. —  The Cougar track and field team completed the first day of the 2025 Cougar Classic with seven event victories at Mooberry Track and Field Complex, Friday evening. Four WSU student-athletes put up personal-best or season-best marks.

In the women's discus, Lindi Kessinger took home the victory with a season-best mark of 43.12 meters on her final throw. Nevaeh Wilson claimed second with a throw of 43.05 meters in her first attempt.

Brooke Lyons took home another victory in the 200-meter race with a time of 23.46 seconds. Her time was only 0.14 seconds off her personal best time. Ashley Hollenbeck was right behind Lyons, finishing second with a season best time of 24.29 seconds. Zoe Ray rounded out the podium with a personal best time of 24.44 seconds. Lyons and Hollenbeck, in the fifth and sixth lanes, were neck and neck for the first 100 meters and then Lyons pulled away by about a second, leaving no doubt she would win the race.

In the men's 200-meter, Mason Lawyer continued his successful year with a first-place finish and the seventh-fastest time in WSU program history. His time of 20.76 seconds was half a second better than his teammate, Grant Buckmiller, who finished the race in second. Royal Haley set a personal best time of 21.78 seconds, finishing in fourth. Lawyer took the lead at the start of the race and there was no turning back. Buckmiller started well and secured the second-place spot throughout the entire race.

Freshman Micaiah Aden clinched the top spot in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:38.23, his second win of the outdoor season. Aden finished ahead of Eric Swedin in third place with a time of 9:55.54.

In the women's 5,000-meter, Jaylyn Lehner clocked a first-place time of 17:44.13, one of two Cougs to go sub-18 on the track. Maya Nichols took second with a 17:57.05 in her first distance race of the 2025 outdoor season. The Cougs also claimed fourth with freshman Sabrina Colbert finishing in 18:01.40 in her first outdoor meet.

On the men's side of the distance races, Grayson Wilcott took second in the 5000-meter with a time of 15:14.12. He was followed closely by Evan Bruce in third place at 15:16.25.

Eli Lawrence dominated the triple jump discipline, tallying marks of 15.05 and 15.06 on his first two jumps, before delivering a first-place distance of 15.23 meters in his sixth attempt.

Freshman discus thrower Kai Twaddle-Dunham capped the evening with a win in the men's discus, throwing a winning mark of 55.81 meters in his sixth and final attempt. Twaddle Dunham reached the finals with a 54.61-meter throw in his flight. Maxwell Moore clinched third with a throw of 54.19 in his second attempt. WSU sophomores Tristian Webb and Henry Sheldrup took 10th and 11th, respectively. Webb tallied a throw of 44.24 meters with Sheldrup firing a 41.88 in his third attempt.

Daj Williams finished in second in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.82 meters. After fouling her first jump of the afternoon, she bounced back on the second, setting a distance of 11.67 meters, her best from the preliminary jumps. Her best jump came from her fifth jump of the afternoon with a distance of 11.82 meters, only 0.2 meters off of the first-place finisher.
