Coach Shulenberger Contract Extension

Cougars Announce Contract Extension for Soccer Coach Todd Shulenberger

| By:
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Director of Athletics Pat Chun announced Tuesday that women's head soccer coach Todd Shulenberger had agreed to a contract extension. Shulenberger's extension will keep him on the Palouse through the 2026 season.

"Coach Shulenberger has established one of the best soccer programs in the nation," said Chun. "His teams are filled with extraordinarily talented student-athletes who lead, win and compete at the highest levels. He's simply one of the best coaches in the country and we are fortunate to have him leading our program for many years to come."

In seven full seasons Shulenberger has brought the Cougs to new heights as one of the premiere soccer programs in the country. The seventh-year head coach has been the architect of some of the winningest seasons in program history including the 2019 campaign that saw the Cougs win a program-record 16 contests en route to that record run through the postseason and their first trip to the College Cup.

"I would like to thank President Schulz, Pat Chun and Anne McCoy for their continued support of our program," said Shulenberger. "The program continues to excel both in the classroom and on the field. Our goals each season are to compete at the top of the Pac-12 Conference and nationally, and we will continue pushing forward to achieve those."

Shulenberger's Cougs have played their way into the postseason in five of his seven seasons and have won their opening game in the NCAA Tournament in each of their last four trips including this season. His 2017 Cougs became the first team in program history to play their way into the Sweet 16, a mark they would surpass two years later.

This season, the Cougs put together another historic campaign winning 13 regular season contests, the second-most in the regular season in program history. They added a 14th victory in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, the Cougs finished the season third in the Pac-12 having posted a 7-1-3 record in conference play. The seven wins tied for the most in program history while the .773 win percentage was the highest in the history of Cougar soccer in conference action.

Throughout his career on the Palouse the Cougs have gone 82-42-15 (.643) the second most wins in program history at the time of his extension. The Cougs have won double-digit games in five of Shulenberger's season including the current 2021 campaign.

Under Shulenberger, the Cougs have established themselves among the elite teams in the nation, a perk that has seen the Cougs send their best into the pro ranks of the NWSL with five current pros having put on the Crimson and Gray. In each of the last two drafts, Shulenberger has watched his players go No. 2 overall in Morgan Weaver (2020 - Portland Thorns) and Trinity Rodman (2021 - Washington Spirit). In addition, Averie Collins (2020 – Washington Spirit) and Makamae Gomera-Stevens (2021 - Houston Dash) have established themselves in the league while Ella Dederick was signed as a free agent by the OL Reign. Outside of the five in the league, a sixth is guaranteed on its way in Brianna Alger, who was selected by the Chicago Red Stars in 2021 but elected to play a final season at WSU before reporting to her pro team. Both Rodman and Collins took home an NWSL Championship in 2021 with Rodman being named the league's Rookie of the Year.

Shulenberger became the seventh head coach in program history in 2015 after cutting his teeth at Texas Tech, Missouri, and Clemson as an assistant coach. He graduated from Robert Morris in 1994 after playing four seasons for the Colonials.
