WSU Academic Services Announces April Student-Athletes Of The Month

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington States baseball's AJ Block and rowing's Renee Kemp have been named the Academic Services Student- Athletes of the Month for April 2020.

Despite a senior season cut short, A.J. Block was still able to excel both on the mound and in the classroom. As a computer science major, he has maintained a 3.62 GPA which has garnered him back-to-back First Team Pac-12 Conference All-Academic awards. Putting his computer skills to work, Block has been part of the Ardu Mission Planner Project to create 3D mapping software to track flight paths, helping to revolutionize the outdated 2D system currently used. On the mound, Block had a scorching hot start to his senior campaign as he became the first Coug in the last 33 years to record three-straight starts with 10+ strikeouts. Overall, he finished the shortened season leading all Pac-12 pitchers in innings pitched (27.2) while finishing second in strikeouts (34).

A native of Te Awamutu, New Zealand, Renee Kemp has sported a 3.76 GPA in general biological sciences with a focus on Viticulture and Enology. Her work in the classroom earned her College Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete award while also earning two-straight First Team Pac-12 Conference All-Academic awards. A true leader among Cougar student-athletes, Kemp spent her senior year as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee In the water, Kemp posted the Cougs' highest finish in the women's single sculls at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational with a fifth-place within the senior category. Last season, she helped the team to a fifth place finish at the 2018-19 Pac-12 Championships as a junior.

Each month Washington State Academic Services honors a male and female student-athlete that demonstrates commitment to academics while participating in their sport.
