WSU Academic Services Announces March Student-Athletes of the Month

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington States track and field's Justin Janke and Samantha King-Shaw have been named the Academic Services Student- Athletes of the Month for March 2020.

A senior from Spokane, Justin Janke has excelled in the classroom and on the track as a multi-sport athlete having also run long distance for the Cougs Cross Country team. An Apparel Design major, Janke entered his final semester with a 3.26 GPA as he aspires to design for companies such as North Face, Brooks, Patagonia, and Columbia. In addition to his workin the classroom, the senior has been an active PAC Counselor helping out his peers. On the track, he most recently placed 19th overall in the Mile event at the indoor UW Last Chance College Elite with a time of 4:20.45. During the cross country season, Janke ran his way to the NCAA West Regionals.

A native of Sparks, Nev., Samantha King-Shaw has been nothing but proven herself among the elite for the Cougs in her third year at WSU. The junior sports a 3.88 GPA in Women's Studies while minoring in both Queer Studies and Economics. She has been named to the President's Honor Roll, Athletics All-Academic Team, and the Pac-12 All-Academic and Honor Rolls including in the fall as a member of the Cougars' Cross Country team. In addition to her work in the classroom King-Shaw has been highly involved in student organizations like Queer Intersection and PERIOD. On the track this season, the long distance runner has been one of the best winning the 3000-meter at the Idaho Open with a time of 10:32.98 during the indoor track season, her third win having won twice last season as a sophomore.

Each month Washington State Academic Services will honor a male and female student-athlete that demonstrates commitment to academics while participating in their sport.
