PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University Spirt Squad completed its three-days at the UCA/UDA (Universal Cheerleaders/Dancers Associations) College Cheer and Dance Camp at the Spokane Convention Center, Aug. 15-17.Â
WSU Cheer, the Crimson Girls and Butch all attended as part of 400 total college cheerleaders and dancers. Fellow Pac-12 schools, Washington and Oregon, also attended the camp.Â
"It's always nice to be at camp with Washington and Oregon, and be pushed by our fellow Pac-12 schools," Spirit Coordinator and Head Cheer Coach, Chris Opheim said. Â "It's great to be in an atmosphere where friendly rivalry can be had, and we can grow and learn from each other."
In the mascot portion, mascots worked on character building, safety, situational awareness and entertainment ideas. Butch was crowded the Camp Champion and took home the Superior Mascot Award.Â
The cheerleaders worked on sideline routines and cheers, stunting skills, pyramid skills and safety. The Washington State cheer squad took home five awards, including; Most Collegiate Squad, Leadership Award, Sideline Cheer Competition Champion, Traditions Award and Superior Team Award.Â
"Our students attend camp to perfect the skills and material we perform on the sideline of WSU games," Opheim said. "It's a good opportunity for our teams to get the jitters out of the way before the athletic season and school begins."
The Crimson Girls, along with all the other dance teams worked on dance technique, styles, choreography and sideline material. The Crimson girls took home the Most Collegiate Squad Award, the Leadership Award Superior Team Award.Â
"At camp we get a chance to learn choreography for halftime routines and sideline performances that we'll use throughout the year," Crimson Girls Head Coach Kaila (Evenoff) Wallace said. Â "We perform at every football game, and a vast majority of the men's and women's basketball games. It's nice to have a variety of styles and skills to display for our performances."
"Camp this year was excellent all around for the Crimson Girls," Wallace continued. "We really put a good foot forward in all the performances and routines, and I can't wait for the Coug fans to see the results of all our hard work."
